CBD-rich oil promises to ease symptoms of autism
The administration of CBD-rich cannabis extracts is safe and effective in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), according to data from an observational study published in the journal Pharmaceuticals.
A recent observational study conducted in Brasilia, Brazil, highlights the potential benefits of CBD-rich cannabis extracts for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Published in the journal Pharmaceuticals, This study explores the impact of a CBD-dominant oil on a group of 30 children with moderate to severe ASD, aged 11 on average.
Study design and methodology
Brazilian researchers focused on a specific full-spectrum oil, Nabix 10,000, with a CBD:THC ratio of 33 to 1. For six months, participants consumed this cannabis extract and underwent clinical evaluations by their designated physicians.
The study also included semi-structured interviews with the children's parents and caregivers to gather comprehensive data on the impact of treatment.
Significant improvements
The results are encouraging. 70% of subjects showed clinical improvements, particularly in areas such as attention and communication. In addition, 74% of the children reduced or completely stopped using at least one prescribed medication during the course of the study.
Parents observed significant improvements in their children's behavior, with 67% reporting positive changes in six of the twelve categories assessed. Importantly, none of the parents reported worsening symptoms during the study period.
The authors of the study emphasized the dual recognition of the benefits of treatment, both from a clinical point of view and in terms of the experience of the families concerned.
They said, «In the present study, we show that the benefits of full-spectrum CBD oil treatment for non-syndromic individuals with ASD are not only seen clinically, but also perceived and experienced by families and caregivers.»
Research suggests that a progressive, individualized dosage of’full-spectrum CBD oil is both safe and effective for the broader treatment of central and comorbid symptoms associated with ASD. Improvements were particularly noted in social interaction, communication and overall quality of life.
Corroboration with previous studies
These results are in line with previous placebo-controlled trials who reported an improvement in symptoms in patients with ASD following the use of cannabinoid-based products. Observational studies have also indicated that cannabis can be beneficial for adults with autism, reinforcing the CBD's potential as a therapeutic option.
