CBD: 240 Novel Food applications filed in Europe
The European Commission has received 240 applications for Novel Food authorization for products containing CBD Newsweed learned this from Lorenza Romanese of the EIHA in December 2018.
Requests come mainly from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the United States.
Since January 2019, the European Union (EU) has considered the CBD-containing food products classified as Novel Foods, a classification that requires EU authorities to evaluate products before they can be placed on the market, in particular to ensure their safety.
So far, only 3 apps were known, 2 for Synthetic CBD (for Cibdol, a Swiss company, and CBDepot, a Czech company), and the other for natural CBD (Cannabis Pharma, a Czech company).
Last month, the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the U.K. agency responsible for protecting public health in the food sector, set a deadline for CBD companies, which have until March 31, 2021, to submit Novel Food applications valid. After that date, products that do not comply with these requirements may not be sold.
France, for its part, has not yet issued any opinion on the Novel Food catalog or on the status of CBD products.
Edit: The first version of the article listed 45 NF applications. according to Hemp Industry Daily. We have since learned that the number was much higher.
