Canopy Growth to supply Germany with medical cannabis
The Canadian company Canopy Growth will ship nearly 7 million euros worth of cannabis to Germany in 2017. Canopy Growth is the global leader in medical cannabis and will distribute therapeutic cannabis in Germany through its subsidiary Tweed.
Cannabis is already available in Germany
Germans who hold a «personal cannabis use permit» may already obtain medical cannabis at pharmacies. Currently, two strains are available to German patients at a price of 15€ per gram. The strains are called «Princeton» and «Argyle.» They will be joined in 2017 by «Penelope» and «Houndstooth.».
The Germans are turning to Canopy Growth for purely practical reasons. The German authorities have legalized the use of medical cannabis sometime in 2016, with implementation scheduled for spring 2017. Until a domestic production system is in place, pharmacies will dispense cannabis from the Netherlands and Canada.
Dutch laboratories such as Bedrocan cannot meet the demand for medical cannabis in Germany on their own. Our German neighbors have therefore turned to Canada. The CEO of Canopy Growth is enthusiastic: «The arrival of Tweed medical cannabis on the German market is both an exciting and landmark event. It is an honor for us to help redefine access to and the supply of this product in Germany.» Canopy Growth, publicly traded company, has further solidified its position as a global market leader after expanding into Brazil and Australia.
Currently, two German companies have the right to import foreign cannabis: MedCann and Pedanios. Both companies are developing a production, distribution, and supply chain for medical cannabis. On their website, the two companies explain, among other things, the many uses of medical cannabis.
