Here's what cannabis does to broken bones
Did you break your arm? Smoke a joint. At any rate, as suggested by Tel Aviv University after studying the effects of cannabis on broken bones.
The study published in 2015 in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research concludes that the cannabidiol, one of the non-intoxicating compounds in cannabis, «significantly aids in the repair of bone fractures» by speeding up the healing process. It also strengthens bones, protecting them against future fractures.
This research could lead to new treatment options for people suffering from certain bone diseases, including osteoporosis, which causes 8.9 million fractures worldwide each year, according to l’International Osteoporosis Foundation. In France, if she were ever to take an interest in the therapeutic benefits of cannabis, there are 3 million women affected by osteoporosis—and nearly one in two women over the age of 50.
A team of researchers at Tel Aviv University tested the effects of THC and CBD separately on rats and discovered a link between our cannabinoid receptors and the stimulation of bone growth.
«We respond to cannabis solely because we are built with intrinsic compounds and receptors that can also be activated by compounds found in the cannabis plant,» one of the researchers commented in a university press release.
«The clinical potential of cannabinoids is simply undeniable at this point» said Dr. Yankel Gabet from the Tel Aviv Bone Research Laboratory. «There is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies, but it is clearly possible to separate clinical treatment from the psychoactive effects of cannabis.».
In fact, cannabis with a high CBD content can treat certain conditions, such as bone disease, but it does not necessarily need to have psychoactive effects to be effective. Unlike THC, CBD has very low psychoactivity, making it an ideal option for people who require daily treatment.
«After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future,» Gabet continues. «Other studies have also shown that CBD is very safe, which leads us to believe that we should continue this type of research in clinical trials to evaluate its effectiveness in improving the healing of fractures in the human body.».
Others medical studies on CBD have shown its effectiveness against chronic pain, epilepsy, and neuropathic pain caused by multiple sclerosis. Some athletes like the fighter Nate Diaz use CBD to aid recovery after their athletic competitions.
