California has too much cannabis, and will soon be unable to export it

Hezekiah Allen, Executive Director of the California Growers Association, sounds the alarm: California cannabis growers produce 8 times more cannabis than is consumed in the state. They could find themselves in trouble when the new cannabis regulations will come into force on January 1, 2018, banning the export of weed.

«We're producing too much,» says Allen, adding that licensed growers «will have to cut back. We're on a slippery slope».

For Hezekiah Allen, some producers will have to stop, while others will remain on the black market and continue to illegally ship Cannabis in other countries.

«In the past, when a product left the farm, there was a good chance that it would be returned to the farm. grower had no idea where it was going to be sold,» he points out. «But in the future, everyone holding a license will have to know exactly where every gram of their crop will end up, and so conditions will change very quickly.».

«Right now, our goal is to get people into the regulated market as much as possible.» explains Lori Ajax, head of the Office of Medical Cannabis Regulation. «Some people, however, will never come,» and so could face prosecution for growing cannabis without a license.

California currently produces between 14 and 16 million tons of cannabis a year, and consumes between 1.5 and 2 million tons. What to do with the surplus in the coming months?
