The eighth annual «State of the Cannabis Lighting Market» report highlights the high and sustained rate of LED adoption among commercial cannabis producers
AUSTIN, Texas, and ROTTERDAM, Netherlands–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Fluence, a leading global provider of energy-efficient LED lighting solutions for commercial cannabis and food crop production, announced today the release of its eighth annual report titled «State of the Cannabis Lighting Market.» The report is produced in collaboration with the magazine Cannabis Business Times which distributes it. The Cannabis Business Times is a national publication dedicated to promoting the success and normalization of the legal cannabis market by providing actionable insights to foster the success and growth of all aspects of this industry.
The rapid adoption of LEDs by commercial cannabis growers remains the main theme of this year’s report. For the second consecutive year, some 70% of the study participants working on commercial farms in greenhouse or indoor growers using supplemental lighting report using LEDs for reproduction, vegetative growth, or flowering. This year’s survey also reveals that 66% of commercial growers using LEDs report yields exceeding 50 grams per square foot of canopy, an increase of 11 percentage points compared to 2022.
«Fluence remains committed to providing first-rate support to cannabis growers, particularly by collaborating with the renowned magazine Cannabis Business Times «to publish the »State of the Cannabis Lighting Market» report in order to amplify the voices of growers and provide essential insights into how they are navigating the market," said Steve Graves, senior vice president of strategy and product at Fluence.
This year’s «State of the Cannabis Lighting Market» report highlights the growing focus many growers are placing on crop quality, which they view as a key differentiator in a saturated and consolidating market. The majority of respondents to this year’s survey (62%) cited «crop quality» as the main reason for using LEDs in cannabis production, with «yield» coming in second at 16%.
«During this period of economic and operational instability, we will continue to honor our commitment: to advance the adoption of LEDs, help growers improve their yields, and support their financial success through innovative lighting strategies,» said Steve Graves.
Among the growers surveyed, those who do not plan to use LEDs for cannabis flowering expressed concerns about return on investment and capital expenditures. However, more than half of those surveyed (56%) have not looked into rebate offers, even though these are one of the most effective ways for growers making investments to reduce costs. Another quarter of respondents (24%) are aware of the rebates but do not plan to take advantage of them. Fluence’s award-winning rebate program has helped growers save more than $26 million to date.
«The findings of the 2023 report on the state of the cannabis lighting market highlight how rapidly the industry continues to evolve and adapt to the realities of a constantly changing market,” said Michelle Simakis, editor-in-chief of the Cannabis Business Times. We now have eight years of data, which shows that growers are constantly innovating and experimenting with lighting technologies and strategies, thereby applying best practices to efficiently cultivate high-quality cannabis. »One of the most dramatic changes since 2016, the year of the first study, has been the adoption of LEDs, which has increased by nearly 60 percentage points for vegetables and flowers and by more than 50 percentage points for propagation.”

Survey Methodology
The data presented in the 2023 «State of the Cannabis Lighting Market» report was compiled by Readex Research, which conducted the survey. The survey questionnaire was sent in July and August 2023 to all active and qualified subscribers of the magazine Cannabis Business Times residing in the United States or Canada and having an email address. To provide the most relevant information to commercial cannabis growers, the research focused on the 126 participants who owned or worked for a cannabis cultivation operation in an indoor facility and/or a greenhouse. The data was then refined to exclude non-commercial operations. Unless otherwise specified, the results presented in the report pertain to participants who commercially grow cannabis indoors and/or in greenhouses, with or without supplemental lighting. The margin of error for the percentages based on the 126 participants who reported owning or working for a operation that cultivates cannabis in an indoor facility and/or a greenhouse, with or without supplemental lighting, is ±8.7 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
