Morocco sets up a framework for prescribing medical cannabis
At the end of September, the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities (ANRAC) signed agreements with five national scientific associations, laying the foundations for the prescription and distribution of cannabis-derived treatments under strict medical supervision.
A structured medical framework
The agreements cover five major medical specialties - neurology, gastroenterology, dermatology, internal medicine and geriatrics - in which scientific research has highlighted the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis.
This development follows an in-depth study carried out by ANRAC in collaboration with the French National Health Authority. The study led to the development of detailed therapeutic protocols, tailored to the needs of each specialty, guaranteeing the safe and effective use of cannabis-based medicines.
Prescriptions will not be generalized. On the contrary, treatments will be limited to specific conditions defined by the protocols, with dosages and quantities adapted to the patient's age, physical condition, and the type of treatment. state of health and other clinical criteria.
Prior to this, the proposed protocols were presented to ten specialist medical associations for evaluation and comment. According to local sources, This consultative process was crucial in ensuring the full involvement of the medical community and reinforcing the scientific credibility of the framework.
An official close to the matter described the initiative as a «qualitative leap» that enables Morocco to move from theory to practice in its regulation of medical cannabis. The source added: «This process will enable authorized operators to produce and market their products officially and legally, creating an important economic dynamic in Morocco. national level. »
These agreements are the concrete application of the law no. 13.21, adopted in 2021, which authorizes the therapeutic use of cannabis in Morocco.
For patients, this measure promises access to cannabis-derived medicines under medical supervision. For operators, it opens up a legal route to participate in a fast-growing industry that should stimulate innovation, investment and employment.
