The adventures of Marc Emery
Although cannabis is now legal in Canada, early advocates of the plant were considered outlaws. Marc Emery gained media renown after a series of provocative actions that brought him into conflict with the law. Some, like Marc-Boris St-Maurice, who also campaigns for access to cannabis, consider his methods too provocative. A documentary on his life entitled Citizen Marc: The Adventures of Marc Emery subtitled: «Love it, hate it, but don't ignore it».
He often defied prohibition: creation of the Cannabis Culture Magazine and the Youtube channel PotTV, Regularly arrested by the police, he was crowned «Prince of Pot» in 2005, when Canadian and American law enforcement agencies joined forces against him after he distributed 3 million cannabis seeds through the US post office. He was arrested and sentenced to 5 years in federal prison in the USA for drug trafficking.
In 2016, two years before cannabis was legalized in Canada and at the age of 60, he opened 6 cannabis stores in the Montreal area, selling recreational cannabis despite prohibition. His stores were closed in the days that followed, and he was once again convicted. However, the sentence was lenient (a fine of 5,000$ Canadian).
It is arrested again, and his wife Jodie with him, for trafficking in 2016 while the couple was on their way to the Spannabis in Spain. He recently pleaded guilty and took advantage of media coverage of the trial to criticize Quebec legalization: «Organized crime has allied itself with the government to control this industry. There is no freedom in Quebec, there is no access to cannabis at a reasonable price, so the government's new program will be a disaster, he said.
Today, Marc Emery travels the world discovering cannabic culture. In 2018, he travelled to some twenty different countries, mainly in America and Europe, by dropping in to see us in our offices. This month, he will be in Chile for the ExpoWeed 2018. He recently launched his travel blog and is preparing his memoirs for publication around 2020.
