Lausanne to test the legalization of cannabis
We as we explained in more detail yesterday, the Lausanne City Council met last night to vote on whether to join the pilot programs in Basel, Bern, Geneva, and Zurich regarding the legalization of cannabis on a trial basis.
The project, spearheaded by the left wing of the city council—which holds the majority—has therefore been given the green light. Lausanne will quickly begin planning the implementation of this full-scale pilot program, particularly regarding the methods for producing and distributing cannabis. The city will also need to determine how to comply with federal law while conducting this pilot program.
With this vote, the Left sought to highlight the overall failure of the crackdown. Oscar Tosato, a city council member, stated: «In Lausanne, 3.1 kg of cannabis are consumed every day, and we have a responsibility to study and manage this phenomenon in collaboration with other cities.».
It is estimated that between 40 and 60 metric tons of cannabis are consumed each year in Switzerland, representing an illegal market worth approximately 500 million euros, which cities are now trying to regulate.
