Israel classifies medical cannabis cultivation in the agricultural sector
The Israeli Minister of Agriculture has classified medical cannabis as an official agricultural sector. Under this new classification, between 15 and 20 cannabis farmers will have access to government financial and training assistance. Ministry officials have calculated that cannabis cultivation is only profitable on large farms, with at least 0.4 hectares dedicated to cannabis plants.
«The use of cannabis for medical purposes is relatively new in Israel and around the world, and its status remains controversial.» have declared Ministry officials. «Selling and using cannabis is still illegal in most countries around the world, but it appears that the use of cannabis for therapeutic purposes is gaining popularity in many countries, and an ever-increasing number of studies confirm the positive effects of cannabis, while also highlighting its risks and harms.»
The ministry has also allocated approximately 2 million euros to 13 new biochemical studies aimed at finding better methods for cultivating medical cannabis. «These studies will enable researchers to conduct basic and applied research and to develop the tools and research infrastructure for the next generation of medical cannabis products.» The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that Israeli cannabis exports will generate between 250 and 1 billion euros per year.
Israel has made the possession and use of cannabis a misdemeanor at the beginning of the year. Users caught in the act of consuming cannabis in public and found with less than 15 grams of non-medical cannabis on their person now face a fine of 1,000 shekels (approximately 250€). The country is expected to move quickly toward full decriminalization of adult cannabis use.
