Humboldt's Finest, cannabis-infused vodka
Humboldt County, California, is known for its massive cannabis plants that grow on its mountainous slopes. So it’s no surprise that it’s also the birthplace of a new cannabis-infused vodka called Humboldt’s Finest. At this point, you’re probably already wondering if vodka, in addition to getting you drunk, can also make you high.
Here is the distillery owner, Abe Stevens’s, response to this legitimate question: «We’ve been selling our Organic Vodka for over two years now. Our vodka is becoming increasingly popular, and many of our customers have asked us to add a bit of «local flavor» to our vodka. That would normally be illegal, but we couldn’t ignore our customers» requests. So my solution was to offer a compromise that captures a bit of the local essence without breaking any laws.”
The compromise: Abe Stevens uses industrial hemp with very low THC levels. The vodka therefore has a THC content of less than 0.3%. So, no, this vodka won’t have a “double Kit Kat” effect.
But according to Stevens, it will offer cannabis enthusiasts a unique floral and spicy aroma. «This vodka, on the other hand, has flavors and aromas reminiscent of fresh cannabis, and we’ve found that it pairs very well with gin, adding a new zing to certain cocktails,» says Stevens.
For now, Humboldt’s Finest will be sold only in California and Colorado.
This latest attempt to combine the worlds of alcohol and cannabis is indicative of today’s “space food” scene, where new cannabis-infused beverages and dishes are being created almost daily.
Last month, a Colorado-based company began selling «shots» of a cannabis elixir. And unlike Humboldt’s Finest, these shots were designed to deliver a real dose of THC to consumers. The creators of this drink say that the drinkable form provides the consumer with fast-acting and long-lasting effects.
More generally, the space food market has been booming in recent months. In 2015, it accounted for half of the 5.4 billion in legal cannabis sales in the United States.
On our side of the Atlantic, Marie Brizard launched a cannabis-flavored vodka last December for the Spanish market, called Shotka, aimed at «rebellious nightclub-goers.».
