Greece: 10 more medical cannabis production licenses granted
The Greek government has granted 14 medical cannabis production licenses since November 2018. The General Secretariat for Industry and the Ministry of the Economy and Development has just granted 10 new licenses for an estimated total investment of 359 million euros, representing 2,250 jobs.
Although therapeutic cannabis has been legalized in Greece in 2017, we had to wait until March 2018 for a bill of law allowing the cultivation and processing of cannabis be voted through Parliament. By November 2018, the country had awarded its first two licenses to the Biomecann and Bioprocann companies. Until now, patients had to import their medicines from abroad. Soon third and fourth licenses had been awarded, respectively, to Tikun Olam Greece, a subsidiary of the Israeli company of the same name, and Pharma Essenza Cannabis in April 2019.
The 10 new licenses have been awarded to Greek and international companies throughout the country, covering a total of 600 hectares. They include Hexo Med SA, the European subsidiary of Quebec-based Hexo. The full list is available here.
The Greek market is attracting a great deal of interest both in Greece and internationally. Of the 71 license applications submitted to the Secretariat, 42 are still awaiting approval, and only 4 have been rejected.
