Elon Musk donates 500,000$ against cannabis legalization in Florida

With the November elections approaching, the initiative to legalize cannabis in Florida, the’amendment 3, has drawn both significant support and opposition. A political committee opposing the measure received a substantial donation from an organization linked to Elon Musk, who is known to be a user of both legal and illegal substances.

Opposition to Legalization

A political group known as Keep Florida Clean, which opposes the legalization of cannabis, received a donation of 500,000 $ from Faithful & Strong Policies, Inc.

This organization, led by Florida attorney Scott Wagner, is linked to Elon Musk who is said to have already donated $10 million to this group that supports the presidential campaign of the Governor Ron DeSantis, opponent of legalization in Florida.

His administration has been criticized, in particular, for promoting taxpayer-funded public service announcements that warn of the dangers of drunk driving in the U.S. states where cannabis is legal. These could be viewed as a «concerted effort» to sway public opinion against legalization.

Funding Battles

If the $500,000 donation from Faithful & Strong Policies was revealed by his close relationship with Musk, but it pales in comparison to the massive financial support that Smart & Safe Florida, the committee behind the movement to legalize cannabis.

Trulieve, the state's largest medical cannabis operator, was a major financial force behind the initiative. By the end of August, supporters of the amendment had gathered more than 100 million dollars, with Trulieve providing a significant portion of that funding.

According to a recent survey conducted by NBC 6 October 1–4, 58 % of Florida voters have expressed their support for the legalization of cannabis. However, in order to be adopted, the’amendment 3 must obtain a 60-vote majority %, which means the campaign still has work to do to reach the required threshold.

If the’amendment 3 If the bill is passed, Florida will join the growing list of states that have decided to legalize cannabis for recreational use. Currently, the state authorizes the use of cannabis for medical purposes, and extending this authorization to recreational use would mark a significant shift in Florida’s cannabis policy.

For its supporters, legalization represents a path toward economic growth, as tax revenue from cannabis sales could benefit state infrastructure, education, and health care. Proponents also argue that legalizing cannabis would reduce the number of nonviolent offenders incarcerated for cannabis-related offenses, thereby contributing to a reform wider than criminal justice.

Opponents, however, remain concerned about potential risks to public health and safety. They point to the increase in the number of drunk driving cases in states that have already legalized cannabis and argue that the societal costs outweigh the potential economic benefits—a claim that has not, in fact, been demonstrated in other U.S. states.
