«czeXperiment»: a social experiment denouncing cannabis prohibition
The Czech YouTube channel czeXperiment recently conducted a social experiment in Prague, questioning public perception and the tough cannabis laws.
Entitled «Kdo zvedne konev první?» (Who will lift the watering can first?), the video features 12 cannabis plants laid out on a busy square in Prague. Passers-by are invited to water them, but warned that doing so constitutes a «crime». Some, fearing prison, refuse; others, motivated by their convictions, take up the challenge. The final twist reveals that the plants were actually industrial hemp, amplifying the absurdity of fear and punishment associated with a harmless plant.
Lives shattered by justice
Beyond the social experiment, the video gives a voice to prisoners sentenced to long terms for minor cannabis-related offences. Lukáš, for example, is serving eight years for growing nine plants for personal consumption, a heavier sentence than for some violent crimes. Other testimonies, such as that of a chronic pain patient sentenced for self-medication, reveal the inhumanity of a system that deprives patients and families of dignity and justice.
The video also exposes a number of glaring inconsistencies:
- criminalizing cannabis while alcohol remains freely available
- the cost of incarceration - around €70 per inmate per day - weighs heavily on taxpayers
- cannabis-related sentences sometimes exceed those handed down for acts of violence
While the experiment takes place in the Czech Republic, its message is broader, aimed at countries where simple possession of cannabis carries heavy fines and imprisonment, and where access to medical cannabis remains extremely restricted.
Closing ceremony, czeXperiment is calling for support for cannabis prisoners and a presidential pardon. Because behind an unjustly criminalized plant, whole lives are shattered.
