Colorado: opening of the first weed drive-in
Competition on the horizon for McDonald's: Colorado opens its first drive-through for marijuana.
In Parachute, Colorado, a former car wash that has already been converted into Photoshop has obtained its license to become the first cannabis drive-through. The store, with the charming name of Tumbleweed Express is expected to open in March.
«As far as I know, we had never heard of such a business model before,» admitted Robert Goulding, spokesperson for the Cannabis Regulation Division, in the Denver Post.
While the idea may seem practical, the drive-through will have to comply with certain very strict rules. For example, no one under the age of 21 may be in the car, even in the back seat. Cannabis must also not be visible from outside the dispensary.
Although it is Colorado's first cannabis drive-through, It's not the first in the United States. The city of Parachute had decided in 2015 to ban cannabis stores, but reversed its decision to boost the city’s economy. Legal cannabis sales account for 30% of the city’s tax revenue, totaling just over 1 million $.
Other businesses in the town also seem to be benefiting from the clinic’s opening. People who come to stock up on supplies there also stop at the town’s restaurants and other stores, according to local official Stuart McArthur. This is a welcome boost to an economy that has been struggling since the slowdown in local natural gas production. The city’s mayor explains that the city’s economy would have been in serious jeopardy without the legalization of recreational cannabis.
A clinic that also contributes to the approximately 200 million $ that the‘The state of Colorado harvested last year on legal cannabis sales.
