California: a town produces so much cannabis that residents complain about the smell

When the California legalized cannabis, some changes were expected throughout the state. But for one city in particular, the impact of this change was felt all too keenly.

Carpinteria is a city on the California coast located 1 hour and 30 minutes north of Los Angeles. The legalization of cannabis has led to a boom in cultivation in this city of 14,000 residents, to such an extent that the residents are now complaining the smell of skunk that permeates the city

Carpinteria is part of Santa Barbara County, which currently holds more cannabis cultivation licenses than any other county. Of the 800 permits, two-thirds are in Carpinteria and Lompoc, a neighboring city. Both towns have taken advantage of the former cut-flower industry—which declined in the 1990s, leaving many greenhouses idle—to ride the wave of the cannabis economic boom.

However, the odor problem persists, and residents are voicing strong complaints. Last February, the county issued an ordinance requiring the growers to begin work to reduce odors from their greenhouses. This measure is expected to be implemented by all by the end of the year.
