Sensi Seeds is one of Europe's leading cannabis seed banks.
Founded in 1985 by Ben Dronkers, who had already been working with cannabis prior to that date, he was convinced that the quality of a harvest came mainly from the quality of the seed, rather than the cultivation skills of the grower.
Between 1978 and 1984, he spent a lot of time collecting seeds all over the world, from the Hindu Kush mountains to Southeast Asia.
When the first hybrid cannabis plants from the USA arrived in Europe in the early 80s, Ben Dronkers was one of the few to get his hands on Haze and Skunk genetics. The arrival of these new genetics enabled the creation of the first stabilized hybrids in Europe.
Sensi Seeds started out as Sensi Seed Club in 1985 (or Sensi Connoisseurs’ Club). All the selection work was done indoors, playing with Afghan hash plants, African and Asian sativas.
The first Sensi Seeds boutique opened in Amsterdam in 1986, next to the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum.
«Through the museum, we wanted to provide people with information about what hashish, marijuana and hemp can do. It's not just about the role of cannabis in Amsterdam's cafés, but about its status as an essential, renewable resource and as a global cultural and natural phenomenon,» he explains.
The Sensi Seeds store also sold cannabis seeds from Seed Bank, another cannabis seed bank created by Nevil Schoenmakers, which Ben Dronkers eventually bought in 1991, thus merging the genetic stocks of the two companies.
In 2006, Sensi Seeds also acquired Flying Dutchmen from Eddie. Eddie, Ben Dronkers and Nevil Schoenmakers were the only ones to obtain the first American Skunk and Haze in the early '80s, and the work of the three breeders was eventually combined within the same company.
Sensi Seeds has also enabled the purchase of feminized and autoflowering seeds.
Some of Sensi Seeds' most famous strains are Skunk #1, Northern Lights #5 x Haze and Jack Herer, a sativa-dominant cannabis strain specially created for the namesake activist and author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes. Jack Herer has also served as the basis for some of Bedrocan's medical cannabis strains and has been distributed in pharmacies.
