2 thirds of Swiss in favor of legalizing cannabis
According to the official Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), the Swiss Ministry of Health, two-thirds of Swiss people are in favor of legalizing cannabis. They also overwhelmingly support pilot testing of controlled cannabis distribution for recreational purposes.
According to the survey, around 70 % of those questioned believe it is important to reform cannabis law in Switzerland. They cite limiting the black market and improving consumer safety as important reasons for legalization.
Opponents are concerned about the effects of cannabis on young people's brains. In addition to strict protection of minors, a ban on advertising and high taxation of cannabis products are seen as effective measures to protect public health in the event of legalization.
More than half of those surveyed recommend developing preventive measures and limiting the amount of THC in legal cannabis products. A small half still want the maximum quantity per purchase to be fixed, and for people with problematic consumption to be obliged to seek advice.
Almost 2 out of 3 people would like to see the minimum drinking age set at 18.
The aim of the survey was to assess public acceptance of controlled cannabis distribution tests, identify the measures required in the event of legalization and gauge public opinion on legalization itself.
The pilot trials, which have been open since May 15, are strictly supervised. Each month, participants will be able to consume a maximum of 10 grams of pure THC, i.e. 50 grams of flowers with 20 % THC. Cannabis consumption remains prohibited in public places. Only adults who already use cannabis may take part in the studies, and their health status will be monitored.
In addition, the cannabis must meet high standards and be organically grown.
