CannaSwissCup: The 35 best Swiss CBD cannabis strains have been selected
A VIP jury held a preliminary selection of the best Swiss CBD cannabis strains on Sunday, January 16. The 73 strains entered in the competition were tested in advance for nicotine, pesticides, mycotoxins, and synthetic cannabinoids. Eleven strains were disqualified. from the CannaSwissCup 2021/22 due to the detection of pesticide residues not authorized by the CannaSwissCup association’s regulations.
The 11 members of the VIP jury, composed of international experts in growing, media representatives, and three consumer representatives from Switzerland’s three linguistic regions (German-speaking Switzerland, Ticino, and French-speaking Switzerland) met on January 16 at the Absinthbar in Solothurn for a VIP expert roundtable.
The coded varieties—for which only the category (indoor, outdoor, greenhouse) was known—were evaluated based on appearance, aroma, and taste. The 17 best indoor varieties, the 10 best outdoor varieties, and the 8 best greenhouse varieties were selected and will be included in the CannaSwissCup 2021/22 Judges' Box, available starting Tuesday, February 1, at hemp stores throughout Switzerland as well as on www.cannaswisscup.ch.
All varieties entered in the contest were analyzed at an SCC laboratory (Swiss Certified Cannabis) for their CBD, CBG, and THC content and—in addition to testing for pesticides and mycotoxins—were also screened for the possible presence of synthetic cannabinoids. All varieties entered in the competition have a THC content below 1 %, and none of the registered varieties contained residues of nicotine or mycotoxins.
No traces of synthetic cannabinoids were found
However, 11 varieties were excluded because they contained pesticide residues. This shows that most of the Swiss CBD industry operates in a clean and careful manner, despite the lack of regulation. Since pesticide limits have not yet been established for cannabis, the organizers of the CannaSwissCup are calling for a zero-tolerance policy on pesticides to be enforced for the CannaSwissCup, as is the case, for example, in vegetable farming.
Furthermore, the organizers emphasize that the issue of pesticides and synthetic cannabinoids is much more significant in the case of illegal cannabis than in that of legal CBD cannabis, and that rapid regulation of the cannabis market is both necessary and prudent.
How is the best weed selected?
Any adult residing in Switzerland can purchase a jury box and help select the best Swiss CBD herb of 2021/22. A trip to Amsterdam will be raffled off among the participants. In addition, the jury box includes two one-day passes for CannaTrade 2022, where the CannaSwissCup Award Show will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2022.
