Women account for 61% of US home growers
A new survey conducted by Stripe Theory on behalf of I Love Growing Marijuana (ILGM), a cannabis seed bank and educational resource based in the United States highlights the growing trend of home cannabis cultivation, especially among women.
According to the survey, Women account for 61 % of home cannabis growers in the United States, which calls into question long-standing stereotypes about the people who grow cannabis and the reasons behind it.
Empowerment Through Home Gardening
The investigation reveals that 66% for cannabis growers now feel comfortable growing cannabis openly, which marks a shift in public perception. This transformation is driven by the idea that growing cannabis at home is not limited to the production of cannabis; it is an act of empowerment. In fact, 57% of those surveyed recognize that growing cannabis allows them to take charge of their health and well-being.
In addition, 38% of those surveyed reported that learning how to grow cannabis promotes a sense of’self-sufficiency and control. This sentiment reflects the broader appeal of home-based culture as a means of become less dependent on external sources for cannabis while ensuring the quality and selection of strains. As one interviewee noted, «It’s inspiring to see people from all walks of life taking up home cultivation.».
A therapeutic practice for many
Beyond its practical benefits, 41% of those surveyed have described growing cannabis at home as a an activity that helps relieve stress, which makes it a form of self-care. For many people, growing cannabis is not just about the final product, but also about the meditative process involved in caring for a plant. This therapeutic aspect transforms what might otherwise be just a hobby into a meaningful wellness practice.
According to the survey, 35% farmers grow cannabis at home, particularly to maintain control over the variety selection and product quality. This level of customization is particularly appealing to those who use the cannabis for medical or therapeutic purposes.
One of the key findings of the survey is the growing perception that cannabis cultivation is accessible to everyone. 44% for farmers cited the misconception that growing cannabis is too complicated as the main obstacle for new growers. However, the availability of educational resources and community support have made it easier than ever for beginners to get started.
Ernst Rustenhoven, CEO of ILGM, highlighted the role of these resources in removing barriers:
«Growing one's own cannabis allows people to break down outdated stereotypes, increase their autonomy, take control of their health, and build a community with like-minded people.»
