Chronic pain, the most common reason for medical cannabis use
According to a report by Leafwell, an online cannabis dispensary, 32% of medical cannabis patients in the U.S. cited chronic pain as their primary ailment, followed by anxiety (26.8 %) and insomnia (18.5 %). The study analyzed data from over 81,000 patients in 32 U.S. states, offering insight into the demographics and conditions treated with medical cannabis.
The prevalence of multiple pathologies in patients
One of the report's most striking findings is that over 58% of patients use medical cannabis to manage two or more conditions simultaneously. If the chronic pain is the main reason, other pathologies such as post-traumatic stress disorder (11.2 %) are also significant factors in the use of medical cannabis.
The study data also reveal trends in the demographic characteristics of medical cannabis users. Patients vary in age, but two-thirds are between 21 and 49, with an average age of 40. Some 51.1 % of medical cannabis cardholders were male, while 48.9 % were female.
The study also looked at the ethnic representation of cardholders. The majority were white (71.5 %), followed by black (10.4 %) and Hispanic (8.4 %), with 7.1 % identifying themselves as «other». The report notes specific trends within these groups; for example, chronic pain is more frequently reported in non-Hispanic white and black patients, while anxiety is more common in Hispanic patients.
Chronic pain: a persistent challenge
The high prevalence of chronic pain among medical cannabis patients is consistent with more general health data. Chronic pain affects millions of people worldwide, often resulting in reduced quality of life.
Traditional treatments, such as opioids, These include the risks of dependence and side effects, making medical cannabis an attractive alternative for many. The Leafwell report highlights the scale of this problem and underscores the need for accessible, non-addictive therapeutic options such as cannabis.
Beyond chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia are important reasons for using medical cannabis. Anxiety, cited by over a quarter of patients, is a growing concern in today's fast-paced world.
Insomnia affects millions of people, disrupting sleep cycles and health in general. Medical cannabis offers a natural option for managing these conditions, providing relief without the risks associated with some pharmaceuticals.
The Leafwell report reflects not only the growing acceptance of medical cannabis in the United States, but also the diversity of the pathologies it treats and its broad demographic scope.
