Why are Cannabis Social Clubs growing in Spain?
Spanish law permits the use and possession of cannabis only in private settings. This regulation has led to the opening of numerous cannabis social clubs in Spain, particularly in Barcelona. Find out why these types of venues are becoming so popular there.
Barcelona, a New Destination for Cannabis Users
Barcelona is definitely the new trendy destination for cannabis users. With its proximity to the beach and iconic architecture, the city offers cannabis users a dream setting.
In addition, the city has many shops of cannabis, headshops, and social clubs, and is home to the famous Spannabis, officially postponed this year due to the crisis in the Coronavirus. Fans will therefore have to come back in 2021 to explore the European cannabis fair.
Opening a social cannabis club in Barcelona
Spanish legislation, which permits the cultivation and consumption of cannabis in private settings, has led to the opening of numerous private cannabis clubs, particularly in Barcelona. These clubs do not sell cannabis-based products; they simply provide a space for users, which facilitates oversight and curbs drug trafficking.
Access to this type of establishment is very restricted, as it requires sponsorship by an existing member, and the number of members accepted is also limited. In addition, to be allowed to join a cannabis social club, you must provide a Spanish residential address and be at least 21 years old.
Personal use only; no sale of cannabis plants
You won’t find any advertisements for a Cannabis Social Club, because these venues are not allowed to promote their activities. While private cannabis clubs are permitted due to a legal loophole, the same does not apply to the sale of cannabis-based products.
In fact, any sale is punishable by imprisonment, a fine, and the complete confiscation of the products and any profits generated, as this activity is considered equivalent to drug trafficking. Also, be aware that possessing or using drugs in a public place is strictly prohibited, even if it is for personal use.
A legal store selling seeds in Spain
You’ll also find stores in Spain that sell cannabis seeds. Just like a garden center, they sell seeds and all the equipment needed to grow (for personal use) cannabis plants. However, cultivation in Spain is permitted only for personal use—in a home, for example—whether for medical or recreational purposes. The scale of the cultivation must also be limited to personal use to avoid being classified as drug trafficking.
