UK to launch its first cannabis research facility
The London-based biotechnology company MediPen This summer, the company will launch its own cannabis research facility, which will be open to the public. The company aims to further study the medicinal benefits of cannabis and develop innovations related to medical cannabis. They are currently finalizing the details to obtain authorization from the UK Home Office, with the goal of studying the various compounds present in the plant and analyzing them in as much detail as possible.
Last summer, the company’s systems were tested by a unit of the National Health Service, a step that helped facilitate a thorough review of the benefits of medical cannabis.
MediPen is a British company that has enjoyed growing success by selling sprays rich in cannabidiol (CBD). These vaporizers therefore contain no psychoactive substances; a boon for their users, who are very satisfied with them and attest to the medical benefits of medical cannabis.
This research also includes the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which will be extensively studied in laboratories. The company’s researchers aim to reduce the adverse effects experienced by cancer patients, particularly those associated with chemotherapy treatments that cause vomiting and nausea. The researchers also aim to prevent metastasis to stop cancer cells from spreading further.
«There is a significant body of scientific data explaining the powerful effects of cannabinoids in cell culture systems. However, we hope to be among the first researchers in the world to begin clinical trials on humans,» explains a researcher at the company, speaking to the British daily The Independent.
GW Pharmaceuticals is another British pharmaceutical company founded in 1998. They also develop cannabinoid-based medicines. MediPen, however, will open its facilities to the public, particularly to other innovators in the cannabis sector. The company is encouraging other research centers to take advantage of their new facility as part of this medical cannabis research and development network.
