In the modern history of cannabis, few strains have achieved the iconic status of the MAC1, also known as Miracle Alien Cookies.
The breeder responsible for this variety, the mysterious Capulator, is known for his relatively low-key public profile and for focusing more on his breeding than marketing, albeit in his own way. Active since the 1990s, he has built a reputation above all for his meticulous work with elite genetics.
The accident that gave rise to the Miracle 15
The origin of MAC1 goes back to a crossbreeding carried out by Capulator between a Starfighter, a variety developed by Alien Genetics, and a local Colombian variety he had brought back from a trip to South America.
During the course of this project, several seeds from this cross were accidentally left in the pocket of a pair of pants... which ended up in the washing machine. Between the hot water, the detergent and the agitation of the drum, conditions were far from ideal for the survival of cannabis seeds, which are generally destroyed by this type of incident.
After washing, the seeds were still collected and placed in a damp paper towel in a final attempt to germinate them. Against all odds, some germinated.
But natural selection soon took its toll. Within weeks, most of the seedlings had withered away, until only one survived. This was the fifteenth seed to germinate, earning it the name of Miracle 15.
Another peculiarity: this surviving plant turned out to be a male. Although male plants do not produce edible flowers, they play an essential role in breeding, as their pollen is used to create new genetic lines.
Crossing between Alien Cookies and Miracle 15
At the same time, Capulator was working on a Alien Cookies F2, a selection developed by Jaws Genetics from Girl Scout Cookies and’Aliendawg. According to the breeder, this cultivar had one of the most impressive aromatic and psychoactive profiles he had ever experienced.
L’Alien Cookies F2 also had a weak point: relatively slow growth and limited returns. This is where Miracle 15 entered the scene.
With the help of pollen from this resistant male, Capulator pollinated the’Alien Cookies F2 in order to combine the aromatic intensity of the’Alien Cookies with improved vigour and productivity. The resulting seeds eventually led to the creation of one of the most recognizable strains of modern cannabis, MAC 1.
The switch to MAC1
When the seeds from this cross germinated, several phenotypes emerged. Among them, one plant quickly stood out. This phenotype had exactly the combination Cap had hoped for: greater vigour than the’Alien Cookies, a resin production and a complex aromatic profile combining creamy, citrus and fuel notes.
This exceptional plant has become MAC1, often referred to as «Cap's Cut» when referring to the original clone.
Official germination of the first seeds MAC would have taken place on January 1, 2016, marking the beginning of this cultivar's rapid ascent in the world of cannabis.
A cultivar that redefined modern genetics
At the start, Capulator did not widely distribute the seeds MAC1. The variety circulated within a relatively small network of growers.
Despite its limited availability, the MAC1 quickly attracted attention. Its flowers became famous for their thick layer of trichomes, which often gives the flowers a frosted appearance that appeals not only to growers, but also to hashish manufacturers and concentrate producers.
Chemically, the cultivar generally contains THC levels of around 20 to 23 %, although some modern phenotypes exceed this range. Its terpene profile often includes limonene, from pinene and caryophyllene, which contribute to sweet citrus aromas mixed with spicy and herbaceous notes.
Today, the MAC1 is widely regarded as one of the defining varieties of the’post-Cookies era in cannabis breeding. His genetics have inspired numerous hybrids and derived varieties cultivated both on legal markets and for self-cultivation.
The story of its creation also illustrates an important reality of the breeding Even in a highly technical discipline, chance often plays a decisive role!
MAC 1 is a little stronger than its predecessor, with a THC content of 23%, giving it a huge punch. Rumour has it that some dispensaries even stock strains that reach 30%.
Appearance, aroma and flavour
The nugs are incredibly dense and so covered with trichomes that you can barely see its green and purple hues underneath. Flavours and aromas are not for the faint-hearted, as MAC 1 is distinguished by a strong note of diesel acidic, accented by citrus and spicy herbs.
Effects
If you've ever smoked MAC, think of MAC 1 as its new and improved version. Users note that this strain offers a powerful combination of cerebral and physical effects, making it ideal for a late afternoon or early evening smoking session. At first, many describe their experience as intensely euphoric, as a few puffs are enough to bring people into the happiest mental state they've experienced in a long time. For some, creativity and concentration can flourish for a short time before its indica side inevitably manifests itself. Depending on your tolerance, you may feel physically relaxed with MAC 1, or you may find yourself glued to the sofa before falling asleep.
This variety is a very well-balanced hybrid, making it an excellent choice for medical users. You're likely to find relief from depression and anxiety thanks to its brain stimulation, and if you're struggling with physical pain, including migraines, muscle or joint problems, a few puffs have the potential to ease your aches for hours. During your descent, don't be surprised if MAC 1 gives you the munchies, making this bud a smart choice for those with appetite problems.
