In 2026, Toad Venom is the most sought-after, most imitated, and most debated cannabis strain on the planet.
Born in Los Angeles from a cross between Animal Face and Sin Mintz, and selected in 2021 by the North Hollywood-based collective Green Dragon, it was renamed and propelled to global prominence by Ronin Seeds thanks to a marketing strategy that was as effective as it was controversial.
With a THC content of 34%, its aromas of mint, citrus, and diesel, and the carefully cultivated aura of rarity surrounding its clones have driven its price to $150 for 3.5 grams in Thailand, about three times the price of top-shelf California cannabis. This strain perfectly illustrates the cannabis economy of the 21st century.
Genetics: Animal Face × Sin Mintz
Toad Venom is the result of crossing two post-Cookies generation California hybrids:
- Animal Face: a hybrid developed by Seed Junky Genetics, resulting from a cross between Animal Mints and Face Off OG. It offers high THC levels, characteristic “gas” and diesel aromas, and a tall, upright growth habit.
- Sin Mintz (or Sin Mint Cookies): a cross between Sin Mint Cookies and Zkittlez, developed by Sin City Seeds. It offers minty and cookie-like aromas, resin production, and a fruity sweetness inherited from Zkittlez.
The complete lineage of Toad Venom is as follows: (Animal Mints × Face Off OG) × (Sin Mint Cookies × Zkittlez)
Which, if we go back even further, places the GSC (Girl Scout Cookies), OG Kush, and Zkittlez among its genetic great-grandparents.
History: “Becky,” the Theft, and the Controversy
The story behind Toad Venom is just as captivating as its genetics, and it has sparked just as much debate as the strain itself.
2021: Green Dragon Finds "Becky"
In 2021, a middleman shipped a batch of 30 “Sin Mintz × Animal Face” seeds from Ronin Seeds—a Los Angeles-based seed bank founded by a former venture capitalist known by the pseudonym Jake—to Green Dragon, a farm and shop that has been operating in North Hollywood since 2007.
Green Dragon germinates the 30 seeds and begins a rigorous phenotypic selection process. Only one plant made the cut. Co-founder Glen S. describes the discovery this way: “It didn’t tick all the boxes visually, but man, it smoked great.” The team named it “Becky”, a California slang term for an attractive young woman from the San Fernando Valley.
2022: Becky Escapes
In 2022, Green Dragon began marketing Becky in packaging featuring a woman wearing a black balaclava. But according to Glen S., a mid-level employee took a cutting of the plant without authorization to the Ronin Seeds grow operation in Oklahoma.
“I can say that it wasn’t allowed. They took it out,” Glen S. confirmed in an interview with GreenState in February 2026.
2022–2025: Ronin Seeds Creates a Legend
At Ronin Seeds, the plant has been renamed Toad Venom, a reference to its “animalistic and sinful side. Jake and his team have rolled out a formidable marketing machine: instantly recognizable toad-head packaging, limited-edition drops, and a massive social media presence.
At Spannabis 2024 in Barcelona, Toad Venom’s “frog head” packaging is everywhere, even before most visitors have had a chance to smoke it. In 2025, clones are being sold for $5,000 per cutting by San Diego-based breeder Blockhead. On the U.S. East Coast, offers of $4,000–$10,000 per 500 grams are circulating on social media.
The controversy erupts
The situation becomes tense in late 2024 – early 2025 when Archive Seed Bank publicly comes to Green Dragon’s defense, accusing other players of appropriating Glen S.’s work. Jake admits on the Mango After Hours podcast that he distributed “fake cuts” in Oklahoma during a business dispute, a decision he describes as “strategic marketing.”
On February 13, 2026, Mango After Hours brought the two protagonists together for an episode titled The Truth About Toad Venom. The conclusion reached by both parties: Ronin created, named, and marketed the strain. Green Dragon did the breeding work and “owns” the winning phenotype. The rest is a matter of credit, business, and ego.
“I’m not angry that she left. What bothered me was that she was given the credit,” Glen S. sums up.
Is Toad Venom an indica or a sativa?
Toad Venom is a indica-dominant strain, with an estimated ratio of 60% indica / 40% sativa. This dominance is evident in the progression of its effects: an initial cerebral euphoria, followed by a gradual descent into a deep physical high. However, it never descends into the total sedation typical of pure indicas.
Its morphology reflects this balanced, Indica-leaning genetics:
- Compact growth habit with tight internodes, typical of the Cookie/Sin Mintz lineage
- Dense buds with thick calyxes, covered with an exceptionally dense layer of capitate-pedicellate trichomes
- Neon-green shades with purple sugar leaves in a fresh finish
- Fast flowering: 56–63 days, one of the fastest among high-end hybrids
Aromas, flavors and terpenes
The Toad Venom's flavor profile is its defining characteristic and one of the reasons for its worldwide reputation.
On the nose: as soon as you open the jar, a burst of creamy mint and cookie hits you first. As the strain opens up, notes of lemon-lime zest come through, followed by a base of diesel and fuel inherited from Animal Face. The finish is unanimously described as “peach ring candy,” the classic American gas station treat. A flavor profile that shouldn’t work, but does perfectly.
On the palate: a sweet, mellow flavor on the inhale, with a hint of gas and mint on the exhale. A dense yet smooth smoke.
Its dominant terpenes :
- Caryophyllene: spicy and peppery notes, anti-inflammatory properties, adds depth to the “gas” profile
- Limonene: responsible for the lemony zest and fruity liveliness; contributes to the initial euphoria
- Myrcene: adds earthy base notes and enhances the indica's calming effects
The combination of limonene-nerolidol-caryophyllene (secondary terpenes documented in Toad Venom) is associated in the literature with sensory arousal and functional euphoria, which corresponds precisely to the profile of effects described by users.
What are the effects of Toad Venom?
Toad Venom has a very specific reputation in the cannabis community: it “paralyzes” newcomers and offers a high-definition experience to seasoned users.
Rapid onset: Unlike many Indicas, the high kicks in quickly. The first effects appear within a few minutes—an electric, euphoric rush that sets in before you’ve even put down your joint.
Cerebral phase: An intense, luminous euphoria sets in, accompanied by heightened sensory perception. Sounds, colors, and textures seem sharper, which users describe as a “high-definition” high. Creativity and socializing are enhanced at moderate doses.
Physical effects: The indica high sets in gradually. At moderate doses, a pleasant physical “tingle” complements the cerebral euphoria without overshadowing it. At high doses, the effects become downright paralyzing. David Downs of GreenState reports that a novice smoker remained motionless for 30 minutes, with motor function suspended, during a sesh in Hollywood.
Main effects :
- Intense and long-lasting euphoria
- Amplified sensory perception
- Creativity and sociability in moderation
- Deep Physical Relaxation
- High-dose paralyzing stone
Possible side effects:
- Dry mouth and dry eyes
- Temporary immobilization with a high dose
- Not recommended for first-time users
Medical uses
- Chronic Stress and Anxiety: The limonene-linalool combination acts as a powerful buffer against rumination
- Chronic Pain: High-Concentration Caryophyllene Targets Muscle and Joint Inflammation
- Insomnia: The transition to a relaxed state at the end of the high makes it easier to fall asleep
- Loss of appetite: stimulating appetite during the down phase
Toad Venom Cultivation
Toad Venom is particularly popular among professional growers for its exceptional density of capitate-pedicellate trichomes, which makes it one of the best strains currently available for solventless extraction (rosin, fresh hash).
Indoors :
- Flowering: 56-63 days
- Yield: ~500 g/m²
- Compact growth habit with closely spaced internodes; requires little trellising
- Harvest monitoring: Harvesting too late shifts the profile toward a heavy sedative effect. Ideally: Most trichomes should be cloudy, with a minimal amount of amber trichomes to achieve the peak of candy-citrus aromas.
For extraction: Green Dragon described the Toad Venom as “elite-tier” in terms of hash and rosin yield. The trichome heads are large and well-spaced, a characteristic documented by West Coast Connoisseurs. Recommended as a benchmark strain for any solventless extraction.
Availability: The genuine Toad Venom strain (Green Dragon’s “Becky” phenotype) remains extremely rare. As GreenState notes, “no verified source of authentic cuttings is currently available.” Caution is advised due to the many counterfeits circulating on the market, at least one of which has been identified as relabeled Detroit Runtz.
