Chocolope is one of the most unique sativas on the market and undoubtedly the most indulgent.
Created by DNA Genetics, a Dutch seed bank founded by two Californians living in Amsterdam, it is the result of a cross between a Chocolate Thai, a nearly extinct Thai landrace variety from the 1970s, and a Cantaloupe Haze.
The result is a sativa that 95%, with a THC content ranging from 17% to 211%, and an instantly recognizable flavor profile: coffee, chocolate, and hazelnut, with a subtle earthy undertone. Its reputation rests as much on its unique aromas as on its energizing and euphoric effects, which often lead people to compare it to a good cup of morning coffee.
The Origins and History of the Chocolope
Chocolope was created in the laboratories of DNA Genetics, a seed bank founded in Amsterdam in the early 2000s by Don and Aaron, two California breeders. DNA Genetics is one of the most award-winning breeding programs in the history of the Cannabis Cup, with dozens of awards to its credit.
To create Chocolope, DNA Genetics started with two strains with very different profiles:
Chocolate Thai : This is where most of the Chocolope's genetic heritage lies. Chocolate Thai is a landrace variety originally from Thailand, which was circulating in the United States in the 1970s in the form of « Thai sticks«, dried buds tied to bamboo stalks, smuggled into the country. What makes it unique is its aromatic profile of cocoa and coffee truly unique in the world of cannabis, thanks to its natural terpenes. Pure Chocolate Thai is now virtually extinct, which makes Chocolope all the more valuable as a guardian of this genetic line.
Cantaloupe Haze : The Haze component provides the sativa structure, long flowering period, and cerebral effects characteristic of the family Haze. It also contributes to the slightly fruity notes that complement the chocolatey profile.
The name Chocolope is a portmanteau of Chocolate (Thai Chocolate) and Cantaloupe (Cantaloupe Haze), a straightforward name that directly reflects the strain’s lineage.
Is Chocolope a sativa or an indica?
La Chocolope is a nearly pure sativa, with an estimated proportion of 951% Sativa / 51% Indica. It is one of the purest sativas available on the market. Only a few strains, such as pure Haze or the original Thai, make as few concessions to indica.
This extreme sativa dominance is clearly reflected in its profile:
- Slender morphology : very tall plant (150–200 cm), elongated and airy buds, typical sativa structure
- Long flowering : 63 to 70 days—patience pays off
- Exclusively cerebral effects : no noticeable physical relaxation, no couch-lock even at high doses
It is a variety of the perfect day, It’s not suitable for evening consumption if you want to sleep. On the other hand, it’s perfect for kicking off a creative day, supporting an artistic project, or (symbolically) replacing your third cup of coffee in the afternoon.
Aromas, flavors, and terpenes of Chocolope
Chocolope’s flavor profile is its main strength and what sets it apart in the market. It is the only variety that truly gives you the impression of consuming a hot chocolate, an instantly recognizable sensory experience for the nose and palate.
Nose: Roasted coffee takes center stage, followed by notes of dark chocolate and hazelnut. A subtle earthy undertone evokes its Thai heritage.
In the mouth: The smoke is smooth and creamy. The chocolate-coffee flavor comes through on the exhale, with lingering sweet notes. The aroma tags on the page (coffee, chocolate, hazelnut, sweet, earthy) accurately reflect this profile.
Its dominant terpenes :
- Myrcene : contributes to the earthy notes and aromatic depth, with a subtle undertone
- Ocimene : offers the soft, herbal, and slightly sweet notes characteristic of Thai sativas
- Terpinolene : responsible for the floral and fruity notes that complement the chocolatey profile; found in high concentrations in most Haze-line sativas
What are the effects of Chocolope?
Chocolope’s effects are among the most «functional» of all sativas; it’s a strain that energizes without causing disorientation.
Rapid onset: The effects kick in quickly, with a distinct cerebral high and an immediate sense of well-being. The euphoria is mild and sociable, with none of the psychedelic distortions found in Purple Haze, no intrusive, recurring thoughts.
Main phase :
- Euphoria and good humor sustainable
- Energy and motivation : Chocolope sparks a desire to take action and create
- Social stimulation : natural conversations, creativity for everyone
- Improved concentration on specific tasks
The comparison to coffee is apt: Chocolope provides a mental boost without the anxiety-inducing side effects that can be caused by very potent sativas like Purple Haze or Amnesia.
Possible side effects:
- Paranoia in people who are sensitive to sativas
- Dry mouth and dry eyes
- Insomnia if consumed too late in the day
Avoid at all costs in the evening : With 95% sativa genetics, Chocolope does not cause drowsiness. If consumed after 6 p.m., it will make it very difficult to fall asleep.
Medical uses
Chocolope is recommended for therapeutic use in the following cases:
- Depression and mood disorders : Its long-lasting euphoric effect is one of the most potent among commercial sativas
- Mild anxiety : In moderate doses, it relieves stress without the psychedelic effects of stronger sativas
- Chronic fatigue : The long-lasting energizing effect helps combat bouts of fatigue
- Attention disorders : its ability to enhance concentration makes it a frequently cited therapeutic tool
- Lack of appetite : Like most sativas, it moderately stimulates the appetite
⚠️ Not recommended for patients prone to paranoia or severe anxiety, despite its relatively mild profile for a pure sativa.
Chocolope Culture
Chocolope is a variety intended for experienced growers, due to its considerable height and long flowering period.
Indoors :
- Flowering: 63-70 days
- Height: can reach 200 cm if left unchecked. LST and SCROG are essential
- Generous yield once mastered: 400–500 g/m²
- According to DNA Genetics, the large, elongated buds are worth the wait
Outdoor :
- Harvest: mid to late October, depending on climate
- Requires plenty of sunlight and a warm climate
- Can grow over 2 meters tall under optimal conditions; limited privacy
