The Senate votes for the economic development of the hemp industry in France
On Thursday, November 17, the Senate adopted by a large majority a draft resolution on the economic development of the hemp industry in France and the improvement of regulations governing hemp-derived products.
«Throughout my term in office, I have worked to promote the development of the hemp industry in Isère and in all regions ,» wrote Senator Guillaume Gontard last September. He was the author of the proposal, which was co-signed by more than fifty senators representing all political groups.
The proposal focused on three main areas:
- the full legalization of CBD in all its forms, to put an end to the current gray area
- the development of an agro-industrial sector to provide market opportunities for farmers while fostering a virtuous economic and ecological cycle
- government support for the industry, particularly by promoting public procurement of hemp-based products (hempcrete, insulation, etc.) or by creating a seal of excellence
A resolution is not binding on the government. It does, however, reflect the wishes or concerns of members of parliament, especially when it receives such strong support. The proposal received 179 votes in favor and 7 against.
The Professional Hemp Association welcomed this new development.
«This sends a strong political signal, as this draft resolution was adopted by a very large majority. This joint decision reflects a consensus and demonstrates the Senate’s commitment to creating the necessary conditions for developing the hemp industry in France. It is now up to the government to heed this bipartisan consensus in order to draft appropriate regulations.».
InterChanvre, which helped draft the proposal alongside lawmakers, also shares this sense of satisfaction.
«This is a wonderful recognition of the plant and the industry that supports it. There is still much to be done, but the community and the support network are growing every day, which bodes well for the future.»
