Peter Muyshondt: a Belgian commissioner in favor of drug legalization
Peter Muyshondt, a Belgian police commissioner in the Antwerp region, offers a rare account in a video shared by the’British organization Transform.
Peter talks about his job as a police officer, in which he was supposed to obey the law and enforce it. His brother, Tom, was a drug addict. The question, then, is simple: Should Peter have first act like a police officer or like a brother?
Peter chose to prioritize his job. He says so himself: he was a coward. Just like his family. «I was too much of a cop and not enough of a brother.».
Tom has since passed away. Peter is now advocating for much-needed drug law reform, and calls for the legalization of drugs. In his view, if his brother had had better access to risk reduction, and if he hadn't been labeled a criminal, he would still be alive.
A rare statement that runs counter to the current police narrative.
