Testing the Pax 2
The Pax 2, as its name suggests, is the second vaporizer from Pax Labs. The first one sold very well. Its little brother came to improve on that, losing size while gaining heating speed and battery life.
The Pax 2 is often called the iPhone of vaporizers, and you'll quickly understand why.
Look at the Pax 2
Pax Labs paid special attention to the packaging. White, simple, clean, almost minimalist. Firefly Vapor was strongly inspired by it for its Firefly 2.
The charging kit has also been designed to take up as little space as possible, to charge quickly (between 2 and 3 hours), with a small extra detail: it is magnetic, which allows the Pax to «attach» to its charging dock.
The Pax's brushed aluminum finish makes it very elegant. One imagines that care will need to be taken with scratches, but ours, which we've carried around quite a bit, is doing very well so far.
The flat mouthpiece makes it resemble a large USB stick or a smartphone power bank, ensuring complete discretion. The "X" on the front, already present on the first Pax, incorporates the vaporizer's indicator light, which signals all of the Pax's states – heating, ready, and temperature selection. A little tip: if you turn the Pax three times in your hand or on itself, you'll get a light show, which is quite captivating if you do it after your session.
The Pax oven is located behind a small magnetic clip, opposite the mouthpiece, allowing the vapor to cool as it travels. The oven is made of stainless steel and uses conduction technology. The dry herbs are heated by contact with the hot wall. You can fit up to 0.35g of herbs inside. You are advised to finely grind your herbs and fill the oven to the max. This is how you will fully enjoy the properties of your contents.
The Pax 2 can also accommodate resin mixed with dried herbs (peppermint or lavender, for example, according to your preference).
Pax 2 Features
The Pax 2 comes with:
- a cleaning kit: small bottle of alcohol and cleaning sticks
- A magnetic charging kit, to plug in via USB
- Two different mouthpieces: one flat and one beak-shaped
The Pax 2 offers 4 different temperatures: from 180 to 215°C. The manufacturer promotes an algorithm that supposedly helps the Pax adjust the vaporizer's temperature level based on your consumption habits. Difficult to verify, but we noticed that it is entirely possible to consume a full bowl and several sessions without compromising the quality of the aromas or vapor.
It also heats up very quickly, in 45 seconds, and pauses between each inhalation. It reheats thanks to “lip-sensitive” technology. Basically, when it detects that you're orienting it to inhale, it increases in temperature to maintain an equivalent temperature. And this prevents the herbs from continuing to vaporize between puffs.
Its battery will last about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Regarding the mouthpiece, Pax offers two different ones. One is beak-shaped, the other flat. We prefer the flat one because you don't feel any heat with it, whereas the beak-shaped one heats up slightly.
When you remove the mouthpiece, you can see the conduit through which the vapor arrives, which will need to be cleaned if you want to keep a Pax in good working order.
Using the Pax 2
Usage level: a single button does everything. One click on the top of the Pax turns it on. It then automatically heats up to the last selected temperature. A long press accesses the temperature setting. The LED then displays the current temperature. A short press selects the desired temperature. A long press confirms, and it's ready to go. And one click on the top turns it off.
The Pax is the vaporizer that produces the most vapor among the vaporizers we tested on Newsweed. The vapor is abundant and flavorful. For people more accustomed to smoking than vaping, it can be a real replacement device from that perspective.
Pax 2 Debrief
We like:
- Its discreet size, with a good grip
- Its vapor, the thickest we've tested, and with flavor
- The heat is well contained in the vaporizer. You can barely feel that this small object exceeds 200°C inside.
We don't like :
- The beak-shaped mouthpiece
- Lack of choice in temperatures.
Verdict:
It's with a 9.5/10 that we finish this test. We thus place it above the Grenco Elite and on the same level as the Firefly 2. As they say in the video, the choice between the Firefly 2 and the Pax 2 will come down to your wallet. The Firefly arguably produces a cleaner and faster vapor, but the Pax 2 is cheaper. Moreover, with the upcoming arrival of the Pax 3, its price has just dropped. And with its 10-year warranty, you're sure to make a good investment!
