Firefly 2 test
The Firefly 2 has been hailed by the American press as one of the best vaporizers of the year. So we couldn't wait to get our hands on it and show it to you. First, it’s worth noting the attention to detail in the packaging, which is generally in line with the trend among high-end vaporizers to offer more than just a simple vaporizer.
The Firefly 2 can accommodate both dried herbs and concentrates.
Firefly 2 Design
The Firefly gets its name from the firefly (firefly (in English), and at first glance, you might wonder why. The reason is simple: the oven, which is visible through the glass of the magnetic lid, glows orange when it heats up, reminiscent of the insect’s luminescent effect. The brand has even adopted the little creature as its logo.
The Firefly opens from the top with a magnetic lid. You can then clearly see the bowl, which has 55 small holes that distribute heat to vaporize your herbs or concentrates. The bowl holds only 0.1g of herb, which is relatively little compared to other vaporizers that typically hold 0.3g. This makes the Firefly an ideal vaporizer for a quick session or for use on the go.
The Firefly 2 is smaller and lighter than its predecessor. It comes in 5 colors and is fairly discreet: larger than a Pax 2 or an Elite, but smaller than a Flowermate or the Focus.
The battery is accessible and removable from the bottom of the device, which allows you to carry two charged batteries with you just in case, or to wait until the first one runs out before replacing it with the second one.
Firefly 2 Features
The Firefly 2 comes with:
- A USB charger consisting of a cable and a charging dock
- A cleaning kit
- Concentrate pads
- An extra battery
The concentrate pads will prevent the concentrate from leaking onto the device’s electrical components. To use them, make sure to press them firmly into the bottom of the bowl so they don’t fall out if the vaporizer tips over, pressing firmly around the edges. All that’s left to do is place the concentrate on the pad and heat up the vaporizer.
The Firefly is a convection vaporizer. The herbs are not heated by direct contact with the chamber but by hot air, which is heated by a heating element located a short distance from the chamber. The advantage is that this eliminates any risk of combustion. The downside is generally the longer warm-up time and the need to use more energy to reach the same temperature.
The Firefly offers 5 heating temperatures for dried herbs, ranging from 171°C to 215°C, and a special temperature setting for concentrates at 260°C. A single battery charge lasts for between 40 and 80 inhalations and recharges in 45 minutes.
Using the Firefly 2
Firefly Vapor has succeeded in creating a convection vaporizer with near-instantaneous heating. Simply place your fingers on the touch sensors, and the Firefly begins to heat up. The flashing green LED indicates that the device is heating up. When it stops flashing, the vaporizer is ready. It takes about 3 seconds to reach 204°C.
The vaporizer’s temperature and other features can be adjusted using the Firefly Vapor app, available on Android and iOS. It works via Bluetooth and connects directly to your Firefly. It also lets you update the vaporizer’s firmware and add features like Power Tuning, a kind of overclocking that lets you produce more or less vapor. You can also check the battery level, and Firefly links the app to its website content (customer support, tutorial videos, online store, etc.).
In terms of build quality, the borosilicate air tube does the job well, and since the oven is located at the opposite end of the mouthpiece, it doesn’t get hot. The flavors are preserved extremely well, and the vapor is fresh and smooth.
All this quality, of course, comes at a price: currently €369. But you’ll be getting one of the best vaporizers on the market today, which not only produces a very pleasant vapor but will also help you save on the amount of dried herbs you put inside.
Firefly 2 Debrief
We like:
- Virtually instantaneous heating
- Steam Quality
- The mobile app that mainly lets you update your vaporizer so you can enjoy the manufacturer's latest features without having to buy a new one
- The ability to see how much of the herbs have been used through the glass window in the metal lid
We don't like :
- the bowl's relatively small size, offset by convection technology that makes excellent use of the herbs.
Verdict:
We’re happy to give the Firefly 2 a 9.5/10. The convection technology works flawlessly, vapor production is excellent, and the vaporizer is discreet, high-tech, and efficient. What more could you ask for? A slightly lower price, perhaps 🙂
