New York: Cynthia Nixon supports the legalization of cannabis
Former Sex and the City actress and New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon has thrown her support behind the legalization of cannabis in the state. At a recent fundraiser, she told guests that she would legalize and tax cannabis if elected governor.
During the event, Cynthia Nixon was apparently «very expansive» on the subject, according to a guest present that the New York Times was able to interview.
Cynthia Nixon declared her candidacy for governor of New York State a few weeks ago. She will face the incumbent governor, Andrew Cuomo, in the Democratic primary.
«Cuomo's tenure has been defined by a series of corruption charges, his failure to fix New York's subway system, and his support of a scheme that gave Republicans back control of the state Senate, with several progressive pieces of legislation failing in the process,» explained Cynthia Nixon, echoed by The Hill.
Nixon isn't the only candidate in the state in favor of cannabis legalization. Joel Giambra, an independent candidate, has also pledged to legalize cannabis, estimating that it could bring in $500 million a year in taxes to the state, which he would allocate to improving the state's infrastructure, as well as modernizing New York's public transportation system.
New York State legalized the medical use of cannabis in 2016, on a very strict basis, then gradually opened up its program to more pathologies and forms of consumption. Current Governor Andrew Cuomo has so far opposed any legalization.
