Mexico: legalization of cannabis blocked
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, after stating in April that he was open to the legalization of cannabis for medical use, set aside his bill without saying a word, even as his party blocked a vote on the matter.
The Mexican Senate has indefinitely postponed the committee review of the legalization bill.
«It’s as if [Peña Nieto] never wanted legalization in the first place,» drug policy expert Lisa Sanchez told Vice News.
She notes that the Institutional Revolutionary Party, the President’s party, is derailing the medical cannabis reform. «It’s either that, or the PIR now considers the president a liability and believes his opinion is worthless from now on, until the next elections in 2018,» says Sanchez.
In fact, it seems that Peña Nieto was opposed to cannabis reform from the very beginning, which raises questions about his persistent calls for the legalization of medical cannabis and a general relaxation of cannabis laws in Mexico. These were followed by his recent silence after his party effectively killed the bill.
The bottom line is this: medical cannabis won't be legal in Mexico anytime soon.
