Vermont, the first U.S. state to decriminalize psychedelics?

A Vermont legislator wants to relax the laws surrounding psychedelics in this US state.

In a bill of law presented at the end of January, state deputy Brian Cina proposed decriminalizing psilocybin, peyote, ayahuasca and kratom, the text describing them as «certain drugs commonly used for medicinal, spiritual, religious or entheogenic purposes».

If passed, the bill would take effect on July 1, removing these four substances from the state's list of controlled substances.

«Whether these herbal medications are used to treat pain or to seek pleasure, it's a health choice, and it's a waste of society's resources to criminalize these healing practices that go back to the very roots of our humanity,» Cina said on Twitter.

Can the project pass? It would certainly have the support of many state representatives, in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. But even if it were to pass the General Assembly, the bill's ultimate fate would rest with Vermont's Republican governor, Phil Scott.

In 2018, Scott signed a bill legalizing cannabis consumption for adults. Vermont, however, has refused to set up a system for selling cannabis. For the time being, only self-production and donation are authorized. Visit Vermont should legalize cannabis completely quite quickly.
