Legalization of cannabis in Colombia

Colombia's Minister of Justice, Yesid Reyes, has declared that the country plans to legalize the cultivation and sale of marijuana. for medical use and scientific.

Yesid Reyes made the announcement on November 12 in an interview with Caracol radio. Reyes stressed the medical and scientific nature of the new rules.

The news was partly a surprise in a country long identified with a strict drug policy, supported in particular by the USA. The new cannabis policy puts Colombia at the heart of the new wave of changes in attitudes towards marijuana that has triggered new efforts towards legalization from Mexico to Chile.

Colombia's Court of Justice has already decriminalized the possession of small quantities of cannabis for personal use. The new rules will apply for commercial production for the therapeutic market.

Health Minister Alejandro Gavirio also announced that Colombia could produce for export to countries where cannabis is already authorized.
