Cypress Hill finally gets into the cannabis business!
In front of a crowded house at the Bhang Bash in Las Vegas, an industry event held in the lead-up to Marijuana Business Conference & Expo, a cannabis fair, Cypress Hill announced their partnership with Bhang Chocolate, a brand of cannabis-infused chocolate, which also offers chewing gum and vaporizable products.
After many years as an icon of the cannabis legalization movement, Cypress Hill is finally entering the cannabis industry!
B-Real, the rapper from the group, was present at the event: «It's incredible that 25 years after the release of our first album, in which we openly spoke about the legalization of marijuana, a taboo at the time, we are finally living in an era of legalization and have the opportunity today to be part of this flourishing industry.».
Many celebrities are now interested in the cannabis market: Snoop Dogg and Whiz Khalifa of course, but also Whoopi Goldberg and Woody Harrelson. The cannabis industry in the United States is primarily seeking to legitimize and normalize itself. The arrival of big names like Cypress Hill is a step forward towards this normalization.
Bhang, for its part, is better known for its chocolates. When asked what products they intended to offer, DJ Muggs, the DJ and producer for Cypress Hill, replied, «We will be offering a full range of products. One of the main reasons for our collaboration with Bhang is that we both prioritize quality. It's important to us that all the products we sell are so good that we would use them ourselves.».
Scott Van Rixel, CEO of Bhang, stated: «I grew up listening to Cypress Hill and I'm a huge fan of their music. If I could go back in time and be asked who I'd like to work with, I would have chosen them because no group embodies cannabis and what it represents more.».
Cypress Hill has often used their media coverage to advocate for cannabis legalization, sometimes controversially like on the set of Saturday Night Live From which they were banned for life. They were among the first rappers to talk about cannabis in their lyrics, long before a Dre or a Snoop. In 1988, while Dre was rapping: “I don’t smoke weed or sess / Cause it’s known to give a brother brain damage / And brain damage on the mic don’t manage”, some Cypress tracks were censored on the radio because they talked about weed in a positive way. It must be said that the United States was in the midst of the Nancy «Just Say No» Reagan era. This did not prevent Dr. Dre from quickly changing his mind, at Cypress's initiative, and releasing [something] 4 years later The Chronic with a very young Snoop Dogg.
In their second album Black Sunday, in 1993, Cypress Hill slipped in a Fact Sheet on cannabis, with 19 little-known or previously unknown facts about cannabis.
«We wanted people to know that we weren't just about smoking, that we were educated individuals across all aspects of the culture. We partnered with NORML, High Times, and Jack Herer and put that information in front of people, for them to read, share, learn, be inspired, and continue the fight, should they choose to be a part of it,» explained B.
It seems that since then, the message of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh has made its way, at least in the United States, and that Cypress Hill continues to spread it wherever they can.
