After the shootings, the mayor of Copenhagen calls a meeting on the legalization of cannabis
While the residents of the Christiania Free Town have decided to close the Pusher Street, known for its open sale of cannabis and psychedelic mushrooms—but also for its gang-related violence—the mayor of Copenhagen, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, is inviting city residents, experts, and lawmakers to a meeting and discussion on the legalization of cannabis.
Five times the government asked the city council for permission, and five times the answer was «no.»
Today, the Copenhagen City Council is giving it another try. In light of the latest shooting at the sanctuary, in which one man was killed and several others were injured, the city of Copenhagen is now calling for a public hearing where the legalization of cannabis is on the agenda.
«For me, there is no doubt that legalization is one of the tools we should use to undermine the illegal market. I respect the fact that this is a divisive issue, but I hope we can now begin a nuanced discussion,» the mayor said in a press release.
The meeting will take place today, September 18.
The Copenhagen City Council has long wanted to launch a pilot program for legalization Regulation of cannabis in the capital. With the recent closure of Pusher Street, a new debate will take place this week.
On five occasions, the city council has asked various levels of government for authorization to implement such a program, and on five occasions, the response has been negative.

Science and extensive experience have shown that cannabis poses no significant harm. Therefore, the only regulation it really needs is to prohibit sales to children and require adequate sanitation, just as we do for all food products.
Every person who chooses relatively harmless cannabis over addictive, highly harmful alcohol significantly improves their health—as well as the lives of their family and community.
