CBD: studies reveal its anti-psychotic effects
Produced in the Netherlands, an exam existing research on the cannabidiol (CBD) highlights its effectiveness as an antipsychotic. In fact, it appears to be more effective at reducing psychotic episodes than currently prescribed pharmaceuticals, with fewer side effects.
Schizophrenia is estimated to affect approximately 600,000 people in France. It most often appears during adolescence, between the ages of 15 and 25, and affects both men and women, although it tends to develop earlier in men. Symptoms vary widely, ranging from paranoia or delusions of grandeur to emotional numbness. Cannabis is often cited as a factor in the onset of schizophrenia.
Antipsychotic Effects of CBD
The studies reviewed by forensic psychologist Lilian Kloft and published in the Maastricht Student Journal of Psychology and Neuroscience highlight the antipsychotic effects of CBD in a pragmatic way.
Lilian Kloft compiled «experimental» and «non-clinical» research that examined the effectiveness of CBD in treating schizophrenia. These studies were based on «animal models of psychosis, experimental studies in humans, neuroimaging studies, epidemiological studies, and clinical studies.».
After noting that CBD warrants «large-scale, long-term, randomized clinical trials,» Kloft concludes with a discussion of comparative studies: «Preclinical and clinical studies […] provide promising initial support for CBD as an effective and safe antipsychotic compound. Preliminary evidence points to high tolerability, superior cost-effectiveness, and a promising side-effect profile, suggesting an attractive alternative to current antipsychotic treatments.».
