Canopy relaunches Tweed... in Germany
The Canadian cannabis giant Canopy Growth announced the relaunch of its flagship brand Tweed on the German medical cannabis market, marking the company's first international launch since the’acquisition of MTL Cannabis Corp. earlier this year.
This initiative comes at a time when the German market is expanding. According to the company, the market is expected to reach an estimated value of nearly one billion dollars a year by 2025, making Germany one of the most strategic destinations for international cannabis operators.
The relaunch of Tweed will initially include three new varieties developed by MTL Cannabis Pablo's Revenge (Animal Mints x Sherbet Cake), Dante'z Inferno (Oreoz × Devil Driver (Melonade x Sundae Driver)) and Frost'd Flakes ( Cereal Milk x MAC 1). Up to five additional varieties are scheduled to arrive in June 2026, with further products planned for later in the year.
For Canopy Growth, The return of the Tweed brand to Europe has both symbolic and commercial significance. Once one of the most recognizable cannabis brands in Canada, Tweed had gradually lost its international profile as the company restructured its activities and cut costs in recent years.
«Germany is one of the fastest-growing medical cannabis markets in the world, and demand continues to increase rapidly,» said Luc Mongeau, General Manager of Canopy Growth. «The relaunch of our Tweed brand is an important moment for us, reflecting both the strength of what we've built and our commitment to providing consistent, high-quality cannabis that doctors can prescribe with confidence and patients can rely on as part of their care.»
A strategic relaunch supported by MTL Cannabis
This also explains the importance of the acquisition of MTL Cannabis, now a 100% % subsidiary of Canopy Growth. With this acquisition, the company aims to strengthen its supply capabilities and expand its offering of high-end flowers to international medical markets.
The three initial varieties selected for the launch are part of a high-end genetics strategy focused on consistency and quality, two criteria that have become increasingly important in the German medical sector. Since the reform of German cannabis regulations, pharmacies and patients have seen an increase in products imported from Canada, Portugal, Denmark and other producing countries.
Building on the well-established reputation of Tweed while incorporating the latest genetics from MTL, Canopy seems to be positioning itself against both its long-established Canadian competitors and emerging European producers.
The company also confirmed its ambitions beyond Germany. «We believe that the European Union represents a tremendous opportunity for Canopy, and Germany is just the beginning,» added Mr. Mongeau.
Financial turbulence in the background
However, this announcement is accompanied by less positive news for Canopy Growth. On the same day, the company revealed that it had received a cease trading order from the Ontario Securities Commission.
According to the company, this decision follows the discovery of ’non-cash technical errors« in the accounting for certain equity-settled warrants issued during the year ending March 31, 2024. Canopy Growth stated that the corrected financial statements should be refiled by June 15, 2026.
The trading suspension order does not prevent common shareholders from trading shares, but temporarily restricts certain officers from trading in the company's securities until corrected documents are filed.
Despite these accounting problems, Canopy Growth continues to focus strongly on international medical cannabis opportunities after several difficult years marked by restructuring, layoffs and declining revenues in Canada.
The relaunch of Tweed at Germany could be more than just a product launch. For Canopy, But it could also serve as a test of whether traditional Canadian cannabis brands can still hold their own in the increasingly competitive European medical cannabis landscape.
