One day follows another, and the press releases all look the same. After Germany, Spain or the Denmark, Canopy Growth, one of Canada's largest legal producers of medical cannabis, has decided to set up operations in Jamaica.
Through a partnership with a local company, its subsidiary Tweed JA will attempt to meet the needs of the Jamaican market in terms of medical marijuana. It will also benefit from the know-how of local growers and the island's climatic conditions.
«Jamaica represents a world-class market in terms of cannabis, and we are fortunate to be working with a local team with lots of experience and knowledge, to put the right pieces in place and turn these opportunities into prosperity and success locally,» said Bruce Linton, CEO of Canopy Growth.
«Making sure we have the brands, the infrastructure and the right people is our priority. We look forward to contributing to the Jamaican cannabis market with Tweed JA.»
Jamaica paved the way for the development of the medical cannabis in 2015. Since then, the government has been working to create a new regulatory framework for the cultivation and sale of medical cannabis, with opportunities for Jamaicans to and tourists.
Canopy Growth, for its part, plans to produce 93 tonnes of cannabis a year by July 2018, solely on Canadian soil.
