Ash catcher: types, sizes and use
The ash collector (ash catcher is an intermediate accessory that sits between the bowl and the bang. Its role: to intercept ash, debris and combustion residues before they reach the bong's main water chamber, keeping the water cleaner for longer and reducing the frequency of cleaning the bong itself.
Types of ash collectors
Ash collectors are distinguished primarily by their angle which determines how the bowl is positioned in relation to the bong:
| Type | Angle | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 45° | Inclined | Sloped-neck bongs, natural bowl position |
| 90° | Law | Straight bongs (straight tube, beaker) |
| With integrated percolator | 45° or 90 | Additional filtration via honeycomb, showerhead... |
| Simple (without water) | Variable | Dry ash collection only |
The model with integrated percolator is the most popular: it adds an extra filtration chamber to its collector role, further cooling the smoke before it enters the bong.
Joint sizes
As with the bowl, The ash collector must match the size of the bong joint:
| Size | Diameter | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 10mm | Small | Mini bangs, bubblers |
| 14mm | Medium | Standard bangs - the most common |
| 18mm | Grand | Large bangs |
The ash collector has two joints, one that connects to the bong, one that receives the bowl, which can be of different sizes. From adapters allow parts of different sizes to be combined as required.
Is it necessary to add water to an ash collector?
Yes, but in moderation. A small amount of water improves filtration and cools the extra smoke slightly. The rule: maintain the water level below the descending stem. Too much water may flow back into the bong or cause an unpleasant flashback effect.
Waterless models (dry collection) are easier to maintain but filter less efficiently.
Are ash collectors worth it?
Yes, on two concrete points:
Clean bong The water in the bong stays clean significantly longer. Without a collector, combustion debris goes straight into the water after the first session.
Easy maintenance Cleaning a small ash collector is much quicker than cleaning an entire dirty bong. The collector absorbs most of the residue and can be cleaned in 5 minutes.
Smoke quality models with percolator add an extra filtration step. Cooler, smoother, slightly cleaner smoke.
How to clean an ash collector
Same protocol as for a bowl in glass :
- Pour 90%+ isopropyl alcohol into manifold
- Add a teaspoon of coarse salt
- Plug openings with fingers and shake vigorously
- Allow to soak for 1 to 24 hours, depending on degree of soiling.
- Empty, rinse thoroughly with hot water, allow to dry completely before re-use.
