Vape
Steam can now be consumed with the help of a spray, The product may be an electronic cigarette, a dab machine, an e-nail, a vape pen (sometimes called a weed pen) or a similar device.
These devices use a heating element to rapidly vaporize the active ingredients in cannabis for smooth, combustion-free consumption. Vaporization also gives people who need stronger medical cannabis products safer access to more potent cannabis through the use of concentrates and extracts.
What does it mean to smoke or use a vaporizer?
Vaporizers have been around longer than you think.
When someone refers to a «vape pen» or «vaporizer», you're referring to a way of vaping, which involves inhaling and exhaling aerosols, commonly known as vapor, produced by an e-cigarette or vaporizer.
Vaping is popular among consumers because it offers a way to enjoy tobacco or cannabis without combustion. Instead of inhaling and exhaling burnt plant substances, e-cig preserves flavors and produces vapor, not smoke.
Why would anyone want to smoke cannabis instead of burning it? To smoke a plant, you have to burn it. Studies have shown that burning plant material introduces airborne and skin-borne carcinogens into the body. When cannabis is heated to a certain point, the desired cannabinoids are released without igniting the plant, making vaporizers the preferred method for those who want to avoid smoking.
Although there are several vaporizers available on the market today, vape pens, direct-draw vaporizers and disposable vape pens are among the most common and accessible devices for smoking. Vape pens are shaped like a pen and use conduction heating that works directly in contact with the cannabis flower or concentrate. The electronically heated screen or metal surface is designed to heat the herb or concentrate to a precise temperature and burn it evenly. Uneven heat distribution can cause the flower or concentrate to burn, which means you're smoking, not vaping.
Why do people prefer smoking?
While many cannabis connoisseurs argue that there's no better way to consume cannabis than the traditional method of lighting up a joint, pipe or bong, consumer preferences are evolving.
So why do consumers smoke? Vaping is proven to maximize terpenic flavors and cannabinoid intake. Vaping also reduces the risk of exposure to harmful chemicals created during the smoking process.
The Journal of Cannabis Therapies led a study in 2004 to evaluate the effectiveness of the Volcano herbal vaporizer by comparing what happens when cannabis is vaporized with what happens when it is burned, or smoked.
The study revealed that vaporization is an effective method of delivering medically active cannabinoids while suppressing other potentially harmful compounds that are a by-product of combustion.
More efficient cannabinoid delivery
Vaporizers can provide a safe solution for medical marijuana patients with compromised respiratory systems. Patients who treat themselves with vaporizers are more likely to receive enhanced medicinal effects. By inhaling vapor through a vaporizer, the lungs are also less likely to be irritated. A clinical trial published in 2010 in the’International Journal on Drug Policy tested 20 cannabis users; of this group, 12 participants who did not develop respiratory disease during the trial showed significantly reduced respiratory symptoms.
Flavor preservative
The key to a smooth, flavorful experience is temperature. Some vaporizers have preset temperatures, while others have dials that allow the cannabis to be heated to the desired temperature, releasing the essence of the cannabis flower.
Discretion
Vaping leaves a discreet trace of vapor after each use, which quickly dissipates. Portable vaporizers allow consumers to consume cannabis discreetly without odor or «visuals». However, some vaporizer brands use natural terpenes to flavor cannabis concentrates, leaving behind a slight cannabis aroma.
But the vape pen itself has a compact design and is easily transportable, adding to the convenience and discretion provided by the vaping process.
Does vaping present any risks?
Much is still unknown about the long-term effects of the cutting agents commonly used in vape cartridges. The four most commonly used are polyethylene glycol (PEG), propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerine (VG) and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). These cutting agents are sometimes added to a cannabis concentrate to improve vapor quality and overall mouthfeel.
A 2017 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, The Carbonyl Compounds Produced by Vaporizing Cannabis Oil Thinning Agents study tested polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400), PG, VG and MCT. The researchers found that when inhaled, PEG 400 produced significantly higher levels of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde than PG, VG or MCT. Formaldehyde production in PG was significantly higher than in VG or MCT.
How to vaper
Pre-filled cartridge
Pre-filled cartridges generally use a vape pen consisting of a battery with a 510 screw thread. Pre-filled cartridges are easy and convenient. Simply screw the cartridge onto the battery and you're ready to go.
Fleur
Vaporizing the dried flower requires a vaporizer with special temperature settings which maintain an optimum temperature range of 185-190 degrees Celsius. The cannabis flower should have a uniform tobacco-brown burn after vaporization. There are various portable and fixed vaporizers on the market, so the first thing to consider is whether you want a device that can be used on the move or just at home.
Pen vaporizers vaporize finely-grinded cannabis flower. The material is placed in the heating chamber before adjusting the temperature settings. Not all vaporizing devices are created equal - it's always best to read the instructions before use to ensure you get the optimum vape experience.
Concentrate
Apart from pre-filled cartridges of cannabis oil, another way to vaporize cannabis concentrates is to use a dab pen, also sometimes called a wax vaporizer. What is a dab pen and how does it differ from a conventional vapor pen? Although the internal mechanics are similar, the distinguishing factor is how the concentrate is consumed. A vape pen uses a pre-filled cartridge, while a dab pen allows consumers to load their own cannabis concentrates into the vaporizer chamber.
The history of vape
Many civilizations have been vaporizing herbs for thousands of years. The first documented account of vaporization took place in Egypt around the 5th century BC, when the ancient Egyptians experimented with heating oils on large hot stones. The trend then spread to Afghanistan, and eventually circulated worldwide.
Egyptians and hookahs
From a product standpoint, the first vaporizer was the hookah, also known as shisa, invented over 15,000 years ago by Irfan Shaikh of the Safavid dynasty in what is now Afghanistan. The dynasty then introduced the method to India. Hookah, called ḡalyān in Persian culture, is today most often used with tobacco products.
Modern vaping
The first e-cig design featured a heavy battery that offered more power, but at the cost of extra weight. Contemporary vape devices feature an improved look that offers both modernization and efficiency.
In 1927, Joseph Robinson conceived the idea of the electronic cigarette and filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the first butane-ignited mechanical vaporizer. His patent was granted three years later.
In 1960, Herbert A. Gilbert, an American veteran of the Korean War, built the first e-cigarette. The original prototype is still widely used as the basis for today's e-cigarette companies.
In Amsterdam, Eagel Bill Amato, considered the father of the cannabis vaporizer, has made a name for himself for popularizing these devices. He called his device 'a safe and effective alternative to cigarettes». He named the device Eagle Bill Shake & Vape in his honor, of course.
In 1994, BC Vaporizer in Canada invented an electronically charged vaporizer inspired by Amato's design, while the 2000s saw the invention of the desktop vaporizer. One of the most recognizable is the Volcano, a desktop vaporizer that allows users to fill a bag with vapor and inhale as needed. Other popular desktop vaporizers are square, modular units with a tube connected to a mouthpiece.
Vaporizers have taken many forms over the years, but one thing remains the same: some people see the value in avoiding combustion and choose to vaporize their cannabis. As long as there is demand, manufacturers will continue to introduce innovative products to meet people's needs.
How much does a vape pen or vaporizer cost?
The price of a vape pen depends on a number of factors, including the market in which it's sold, the amount of distillate in the cartridge (usually half a gram or a whole gram), the quality of the cannabis concentrate and the vaping device, and whether the device is disposable or reusable. You should also consider certain battery characteristics when choosing a vapor pen. The overall heating time of the device and the amount of vapor produced will be dictated by the continuous discharge rate (CDR) and output voltage. If you want a vape pen that will remain functional without the need for constant recharging, look for one with a large battery capacity.
Options range from inexpensive stand-alone batteries to starter kits that provide a battery charger, refillable vape cartridges and additional tools to help maintain the vape pen. Most importantly, you should always strive to purchase vape products from reputable brands that provide a certificate of analysis from a third-party testing laboratory.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to feel the effects of your vape?
It depends on your vaping method, but vape pens and dry flower vaporizers generally begin to produce effects within minutes of consumption. Feeling the full effects of a vape pen or vaporized flower may take a little longer, perhaps 10-15 minutes. The most important factor to bear in mind whenever you talk about the time it takes for the effects of cannabis to begin is that everyone's body is different, and will therefore react differently to cannabis.
How do you know if the grass is finished after spraying?
Once your vaporized herb has turned from green to dark brown, most of its cannabinoids have been activated and its potential effects will be considerably diminished. If your vaporized herb has turned black, it has probably been vaporized for too long or at too high a temperature.
Can you smoke pot after it has been vaporized?
Yes, you can smoke weed that has already been through a vaporizer, but the smell and flavor of the bud, as well as the high it produces, will be degraded. If your vaporized weed is light to dark brown, some cannabinoids may remain to produce a slight effect, but the deteriorated smell, flavor and effect won't be worth it.
