Can cannabis treat the absence of orgasm? The debate opens in the U.S.
At least four U.S. states are considering adding female orgasmic disorder (FOD) to the requirements for medical cannabis. Supporters of this measure point to a growing number of studies showing that cannabis can significantly improve frequency, ease and satisfaction of orgasm in TOF sufferers.
What do we know about orgasm and cannabis?
The Female Orgasm Research Institute, a non-profit organization headed by Suzanne Mulvehill, is working in different parts of the U.S. to officially recognize the benefits that cannabis can offer.
According to Mulvehill, 41% of women worldwide suffer from anorgasmia. Last year, she submitted a petition to add the disorder to Ohio's list of qualifying conditions.
A clinical sexologist, Ms. Mulvehill draws on research dating back to the 1970s that have been backed up by more recent studies indicating that cannabis use prior to sexual intercourse can increase the likelihood of orgasm or multiple orgasms, alleviate orgasm-related difficulties and increase satisfaction, among other benefits.
«Women with FOD have more mental health issues, they take more medication,» Mulvehill said in an interview with Marijuana Moment. «They suffer more from anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and a history of sexual abuse. It's not just about pleasure, it's a human right.
«This is a medical condition that deserves medical treatment,» she added.
U.S. states begin debate
Four U.S. states are therefore considering making orgasmic disorder a pathology to be treated with cannabis. Ohio is the most advanced. The State Medical Board announced that orgasmic disorder, like autism spectrum disorder, would be subject to expert review and public consultation, following petitions filed.
Elsewhere, Illinois regulators will meet on the issue next month, as will New Mexico and Connecticut.
