Canada sold more than 2.6 billion $CA worth of cannabis in 2020
Legal sales of Cannabis in Canada totaled 2.6 billion $CA (1.7 billion €) for the year 2020, according to the latest data According to Statistics Canada, this represents an increase of 1,20% compared to 2019 cannabis sales, which were estimated at 1.2 billion $CA (0.8 billion €).
In December alone, sales totaled 298.4 million $CA, up 14.3% from the previous month. This figure caps off a year of strong growth driven by the opening of new retail stores in many provinces and due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The four largest cannabis markets in Canada remain Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, and British Columbia, which accounted for more than 84% of legal cannabis sales in December:
- Ontario: 94.6 million $CA
- Alberta: 63.8 million $CA
- Quebec: 50.8 million $CA
- British Columbia: 42.5 million $CA
Statistics Canada estimated that the Legal cannabis sales have surpassed illicit sales for the first time in the third quarter of 2020. Statistics Canada tracks legal cannabis sales at licensed brick-and-mortar cannabis stores, private-sector online sales in certain provinces, and provincially operated online stores in others.
