Canada: coffee giant Second Cup to open cannabis stores
Second Cup, Canada's second-largest coffee retailer, gets into cannabis. Its shares climbed 33%.
The chain has entered into a partnership with National Access Cannabis (NAC), a company specializing in the prescription of cannabis, to build a network of recreational cannabis dispensaries in Western Canada, with a view to expanding into other provinces.
However, these stores will not be authorized in Quebec or Ontario, where cannabis will be distributed through state-owned outlets.
Counters selling cannabis will be separated from cafés, and any transformation of a Second Cup café into a cannabis dispensary will in any case have to be approved by the local regulatory committee and the franchise.
«Second Cup will offer consumers access to quality cannabis products and superior service in the comfortable setting they have come to expect from NAC.» said Mark Goliger, CEO of NAC.
