Barney's Farm relaunches the AK-47: the return of a legend
Seed bank Barney's Farm has announced the return of the AK-47 to its catalog. To new collectors, this may seem like just another novelty. But for anyone who followed the European scene in the 1990s and 2000s, the AK-47 is a true Amsterdam classic.
A cornerstone of Amsterdam genetics
Originally created by Serious Seeds, AK-47 quickly became one of the most recognizable varieties. The breeder behind this line, Simon Smit, developed the variety in the early 1990s as a four-way hybrid combining Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan genetics.
At a time when many hybrids were unstable or inconsistent, AK-47 stood out for its balance: rather sativa effects, high THC levels for its time, dense resin production and relatively manageable flowering times. It won several Cannabis Cups and quickly earned a reputation as a «must-have» variety for hobbyists and breeders alike.
Despite its aggressive name, the’AK-47 became known for its surprisingly balanced profile: stimulating and cerebral, yet rooted in Afghan structure and resin production. For years, it set the benchmark for what a high-quality European hybrid could be.
The genetics behind Barney's Farm AK-47
Although the AK-47 never completely disappeared, authentic versions from large visible seed banks have become harder to find.
Barney's Farm presents its AK-47 as a four-way hybrid derived from local Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan bloodlines, the same regional base historically associated with the original AK-47.
According to the brand, this variety expresses a sativa dominance of around 65 to 70%, which corresponds to the traditional profile. Its structure reflects its Afghani influence, while its terpene profile and effects tend towards the stimulating, energetic side inherited from its Latin American and South Asian roots.
Serious Seeds, the original creator of AK-47, has always been discreet about the exact choice of parents and the selection process. Although both versions share the same geographical base (Colombian, Mexican, Thai and Afghan genetics), Barney's Farm seems to present its AK-47 as a reinterpretation of this classic four-way base rather than a direct continuation of the original Serious Seeds line.
Barney's Farm has recently emphasized traditional genetics in the expansion of its catalog. The AK-47 has its place there!
