A recent Gallup poll found that 70% of Americans believe that smoking Cannabis is «morally acceptable,» compared to 28% who believe it is «morally wrong,» and only 2% who had no opinion or stated that «it was not a moral issue.».
Among the subjects that interested The Gallup study, smoking cannabis ranked lower than gambling (71%), premarital sex between a man and a woman (72%), divorce (77%), alcohol consumption (86%), and contraception (90%).
Among the issues considered more morally unacceptable than smoking cannabis are stem cell research using human embryos (66%), having a child out of wedlock (66%), same-sex relationships (66%), medical testing on animals (56%), the death penalty (54%), buying and wearing animal fur (54%), medically assisted suicide (51%), abortion (44%), sexual relations among teenagers (38%), pornography (36%), animal cloning (34%), polygamy (20%), suicide (18%), human cloning (12%), and extramarital affairs between men and women (9%).
When we look more closely at the respondents’ profiles and political leanings, cannabis use was considered morally acceptable by a large majority (83%) of self-identified Liberals, but by only a slim margin (51%) of those who identified as Conservatives. In addition to cannabis use, seven issues were deemed acceptable by the majority of both liberals and conservatives, including: contraception, divorce, sexual relations between unmarried men and women, alcohol consumption, having a child out of wedlock, medical testing on animals, and gambling.
A Gallup poll October 2019 had revealed that 66% of Americans supported the legalization of cannabis. When the institute first asked the question about cannabis in 1969, support for legalization stood at just 12%.
55% Americans also believe that the legalization of cannabis is a successful policy.
