Bedrocan returns to the Canadian medical cannabis market
Bedrocan, producer of pharmaceutical grade cannabis based in the Netherlands, recently obtained a cultivation license Health Canada, marking its highly anticipated return to the Canadian market.
The company, known for its standardized and homogenous cannabis products, ceased operations in Canada several years ago, but is now poised for a comeback, with plans to begin production in early 2025.
The Story of Bedrocan in Canada
Bedrocan was one of the first licensed cannabis producers in Canada, having established its operations under the Canadian medical cannabis program.
After selling his shares in Canopy Growth In 2016, Bedrocan withdrew from the market, focusing on its European operations. The sale allowed Bedrocan to distance itself from Canopy Growth's large-scale recreational cannabis production strategy.
According to Bedrocan's CEO, Jaap Erkelens, the company has always maintained its objective to produce cannabis for strictly medical use, which remains the company's primary mission today.
A legal agreement between Bedrocan and Canopy Growth prevented the former from returning to the Canadian market until January 1, 2020. With the expiration of that agreement, Bedrocan has prepared its return, fulfilling what it describes as a «long-held promise» to bring its standardized medical cannabis products back to Canadian patients.
In a press release, Bedrocan announced the acquisition of its former production site at Scarborough, Ontario, which will serve as the basis for its new Canadian operations. Bedrocan's cultivation license was granted by Health Canada on September 27, 2024, allowing the company to start producing cannabis at the facility.
A pharmaceutical approach to cannabis
What distinguishes Bedrocan many other cannabis producers, it is his commitment to a strictly pharmaceutical from cannabis production. Since its inception in 2003, the company has focused exclusively on the production of cannabis for medical purposes, ensuring that its products meet the highest standards of quality and consistency.

One of Bedrocan's main advantages is its ability to standardize its cannabis products, thus guaranteeing patients the same therapeutic effect with each use. This result is achieved through a meticulous cultivation process that ensures levels of THC and CBD Consistency across all products. This reliability is crucial for patients using cannabis to manage chronic illnesses, as fluctuations in potency or composition of cannabis products can lead to unpredictable outcomes.
As part of its return to the Canadian market, Bedrocan plans to offer several of its standardized cannabis products to Canadian patients. The company's flagship flower, Bedrocan®, known for its consistent cannabinoid profile, will be one of the first products to be made available. In addition, Bedrocan recently announced a new strain at Strong CBD content, called Bedrolina, who is produced at its facilities in Denmark and which could also be introduced into the Canadian market in the future.
The Canadian medical cannabis market
The return of Bedrocan in Canada is particularly timely, given the difficulties Canadian patients who use cannabis for medical purposes are currently experiencing in accessing consistent, high-quality products. In a statement made earlier this year, Bedrocan highlighted the fact that many patients continue to struggle to access medical cannabis, particularly products suited to their specific therapeutic needs.
In terms of distribution, Bedrocan plans to partner with a third-party medical sales channel to reach registered patients in Canada. This approach will allow the company to continue focusing on production while leveraging established distribution networks to get its products into the hands of those who need them.
