The Cannabis Medical Bike Tour will be held in France in 2020!
Perhaps you are not familiar with the Cannabis Medical Bike Tour (CMBT) And are you wondering right now, “What on earth is that?” The CMBT is Europe’s biggest sporting event—more specifically, a cycling tour—centered around cannabis. Its goal is to raise funds for medical cannabis research. It has been around since 2012 and has already passed through several European countries. Next year, it will be France’s turn to host it.
A Little Background
The Medical Cannabis Bike Tour was launched by Luc Krol, the founder of the seed bank Paradise Seeds (Netherlands) joined by Matej Snail, the founder of Snail Rolling Papers (Slovenia). They were the only two participants in the first MCBT in 2012. Their goal was to raise funds to conduct independent research on medical cannabis. The movement quickly gained momentum. Based in Spain for the first three years, the tour then traveled through the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Austria.
In total, since 2012, donations have raised €450,000. These funds will be invested in a clinical trial to treat patients with glioma (brain cancer) using a combination of cannabinoids (THC and CBD) and anticancer drugs. This clinical trial will build on the work of Spanish doctors Guillermo Velasco and Manuel Guzman of the Complutense University of Madrid, who have already obtained conclusive results in the laboratory.
After a two-year hiatus, the race is back, and this time it’s taking place on the roads of France. «We took a break, but I’m very happy to say that we’ve decided to race again in 2020! We’re very excited to race in France, a country we believe is now ready to host this cycling tour, thanks to the encouraging developments regarding medical cannabis there. Of course, France is also a sort of spiritual home for cycling, so having a Medical Cannabis Tour de France will be something truly wonderful!» said Luc Krol, founder of the MCB Tour.
The race lasts 3 days and covers 420 km. Runners from all over the world take part. They are either patients who use medical cannabis or pro-cannabis activists, and they gather every year to wear the yellow jersey and support the cause in a festive, sports-oriented atmosphere.
