In Sweden, two patients authorized to treat themselves with cannabis
Two patients suffering from chronic back pain now have the right to use medical cannabis in Sweden. For the first time in the country's history, the use of dried flowers has been recognized as an effective medication. The two patients, suffering from severe back pain, acquired this right following pressure exerted by their doctors on the Medical Products Agency.
Doctor Fredrik Von Kieseritzky, a supporter of both patients, praises the pragmatism of the health authorities. «Personally, I think it's important to differentiate between the medical and recreational use of cannabis. In this case, the patients won't be smoking the cannabis but ingesting it in the form of food.»
Progress on a case-by-case basis
The Swedish government must now contact the Dutch Ministry of Health and negotiate with the company. Bedrocan for appropriate treatment. Normally, both patients with spinal cord injuries should receive Bediol. This strain contains around 6.8% of THC and 8% of CBD, and comes pre-grinded with a dosette spoon to administer the perfect dosage.
Karl Mikael Kalner, The representative of the French Health Products Agency stresses that this act will not lead to the widespread use of medical cannabis. «There is a risk of abuse, and the possession and consumption of this drug are prohibited. But we use other substances that are considered narcotics. If the rules are followed correctly, there is no reason to refuse these clinical trials. The distribution of medical cannabis in Sweden is done on a case-by-case basis and requires a lot of legislative action.» Prior to this «event», only the Sativex from GW Pharmaceuticals was approved in the country for the treatment of spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis.
