The Scottish National Party wants to decriminalize all drugs
Members of the Scottish National Party (SNP) have passed a motion to give Scotland the legal power to decriminalize drug use.
Today, public drug policy is guided by the UK and France. Misuse of Drugs Act.
The motion is more an appeal to the UK to concede the Scottish Parliament the right to create its own drug laws, so that the country potentially considers «all options for harm reduction, including declassification of certain drugs, decriminalization and regulation.»
The motion has no immediate effect on the country's public drug policies, but calls on Scottish MPs to conduct a review of current public policies, focusing on substance misuse as a public health issue rather than a criminal matter.
The aim is to get legislators to «remove the stigma associated with addiction, break down barriers between police and communities, and enable policies to reflect the values of our progressive society».
«We need to reform our public drug policy because decades of the «War on Drugs» have failed us,» said Josh Mennie, National Council member and motion representative.
«All the government has managed to do with this War on Drugs is criminalize a generation of people who have chosen to use cannabis and perhaps other substances. We deserve a public drug policy that more accurately reflects our progressive values and allows us to have choice.»
The motion is not currently supported by the Scottish Government, but its adoption as a party political theme could pave the way for drug law reform and shape future discussions.
